Tiny Gosling Collapses On Busy Road As Mother Rushes Back

Standing Guard on the Yellow Line

The adult goose thrust her broad wings wide, planting her black webbed feet directly in front of the dark bumper of an oncoming SUV.

Brake lights flared red as the vehicle slowed to an abrupt halt just feet from her outstretched feathers.

Behind the front grill of the idling car, several yards back on the double yellow lines, a tiny ball of yellow down sat motionless against the grey asphalt.

The rest of the clutch had reached the gravel shoulder near the lake, but this lone gosling had dropped to its belly mid-stride, unable to take another step.

With her neck stretched tall, the goose let out a sharp, raspy hiss toward the windshield.

She did not look toward the grass or the safety of the water.

Her focus remained locked on the pavement beneath the idling engine.

A Shield of Feathers

Turning away from the stopped vehicle, she sprinted toward the center dividing stripe with her wings lifted high like a protective canopy.

She halted directly above the tiny gosling, stepping straddled over its body.

Her broad grey and brown wings arched down around the chick, blotting out the sight of oncoming tires and towering metal grilles.

Drivers behind the lead SUV touched their brakes, forming a motionless queue stretching back around the bend of the lakefront road.

Underneath her chest feathers, the tiny chick barely shifted, its head resting flat against the painted yellow line.

The mother dipped her dark neck down, bringing her bill within inches of the gosling’s back.

She made low, rhythmic clicking sounds in her throat, gently nudging the baby’s downy flank.

The chick shifted slightly, its small webbed feet scrabbling for traction on the smooth road surface.

Nudging Her Baby to Safety

She nudged again, hooking the blunt tip of her bill softly beneath the gosling’s tail feathers to lift it upright.

The baby wobbled, pushed itself onto two shaky legs, and blinked in the open air.

The mother took a deliberate step backward toward the shoulder, keeping her head low and her beak pointed at the chick’s path.

Every time the gosling slowed down, her black bill gave another encouraging nudge from behind.

Two sibling goslings scampered back from the gravel edge, chirping and circling around their mother’s heels.

The mother kept her body between the moving chicks and the line of waiting cars, guiding them toward the roadside verge.

One by one, the four goslings scrambled over the concrete curb and vanished into the dense green leaves of a roadside shrub, followed closely by the mother as the first SUV eased forward down the road.
