A Sudden Interruption at the Desk
The polished wooden rolltop slammed shut across the old man’s knuckles, sending his pen rolling onto the blotter.
He gasped and yanked his hand back, cradling his wrist against his tweed jacket as tears sprang to the corners of his eyes.
A woman stepped out from the shadows of the book-lined study, her jaw tight and her eyes fixed squarely on his desk.
“We’re not waiting any longer,” she said, leaning close enough that her breath stirred the loose papers on the desk surface.
The father gripped his aching fingers, raising his open palm toward her as it shook uncontrollably in the dim lamplight.
“My hands… you’ve locked it,” he stammered, his chin quivering as he stared into her face. “How could you?”
Bringing Truth Into the Open
Before he could stand, a younger man stepped into view, hauling a heavy vanity mirror framed by bright vanity bulbs across the room.
“Dad, don’t make this harder,” the son murmured, setting the metallic base down hard onto the antique mahogany wood.
A switch clicked, and intense white bulbs flared to life, casting harsh light directly across the father’s lined forehead.
“The light will help you see clearly,” the daughter said, her reflection glowing sharply inside the mirror’s glass frame.
The father blinked against the glare, his eyes wide and bewildered as he searched both of their unyielding faces.
He drew in a slow, ragged breath, letting the tremor in his hands slowly travel down to his lap.
Reaching for the Brass Key
Rather than arguing, the old man slowly straightened his back against the worn leather chair.
He lifted his right arm above the glowing frame of the mirror, holding a heavy, circular brass skeleton key out between his thumb and forefinger.
The son’s lips parted slightly, his gaze darting upward toward the gleaming metal as his throat bobbed.
“You want to see what’s inside?” the father asked, his voice steadying as he lowered the key toward the hidden lock. “Let’s all see.”
The woman pulled back half a step, the sharpness leaving her shoulders as doubt crept into her expression.
“I… I didn’t know,” she whispered, glancing nervously at the key resting in his grip.
The Hidden Drawer Slides Open
The father turned the key into the brass keyway until a muffled click signaled the release of the desk’s concealed compartment.
The narrow drawer slid outward on wooden runners, revealing decades of organized history resting undisturbed inside.
A towering bundle of worn cream folders and handwritten letters rested side by side, tied with faded string under the soft library glow.
