Facing An Angry Parent On The Road
An adult mute swan flared its wide white wings, thrusting its orange beak straight at a woman’s outstretched fingers. Just inches away on the dark pavement, a solitary grey cygnet sat crouched, unable to stand.
Cars sped by along the narrow asphalt lane just feet away, the rush of tires vibrating through the ground. The mother swan stepped forward, placing her bulk directly between the traffic and her chick.
The woman pulled her hand back as the bird snapped forward, air hissing sharply between the feathers. Instead of retreating, she kept her stance low and moved her fingers forward again, murmuring soft sounds to the agitated parent.
The swan lunged a second time, wings beating against the damp air. The woman kept her hand open, palm facing up, holding perfectly still while the sharp bill grazed the empty space above her wrist.
A Moment Of Calming Trust
After the second strike, the bird’s neck curved into an S-shape rather than a straight spear. The woman extended two fingers and lightly stroked the soft feathers beneath the swan’s lower bill, whispering quiet reassurances.
The swan stopped hissing. The wide white wings lowered against its flanks, folding back into place.
Kneeling onto the road, the woman leaned forward over the asphalt. The mother swan took half a step aside, watching her every motion without opening her wings again.
The woman slid both palms under the cygnet’s grey down, lifting its small body off the cold pavement. The chick kicked its dark webbed feet, peeping as it rose into the air.
Carrying The Little One To Safety
Holding the cygnet against her chest, the woman stood up and turned away from the passing traffic. The adult swan followed at her heels, neck stretched forward, watching the chick held in her hands.
They reached the concrete barrier separating the road from the wide shoreline. The adult swan scrambled down the bank, moving toward the dark ripples of the lake.
The woman walked out along the stone ledge over the water, bending her knees as she approached the drop-off. Below, the adult bird slid into the lake, turning around immediately to face the ledge.
The woman cupped the cygnet in both hands, lowering her arms down toward the surface. The chick paddled its feet in midair, eager for the water beneath it.
Reunion On The Open Water
The woman’s hands touched the lake surface, releasing the fluffy grey chick into the water. It bobbed lightly on the ripples, balancing itself instantly.
The mother swan swam directly toward the little bird, bowing her long neck downward. She nudged the cygnet gently with her bill, guiding it against her white side.
The chick paddled furiously, tucking itself close alongside the adult’s feathers. The woman rested on her haunches on the stone barrier, her hands resting on her knees as she watched the two birds pull away from the shore.
Side by side, the white swan and the grey cygnet glided outward across the glass-like water, leaving a small wake behind them.
