An Urgent Standoff In The Pasture
A dappled grey mare stepped back against the wooden fence, lowering her head toward a weathered log resting in the mud.
Her ears flicked forward while her hooves remained anchored to the damp soil. She refused to move away from the fallen timber, nudging the rough bark with her nose.
A man in a heavy dark jacket walked out across the muddy turf, tracking the mare’s fixed downward gaze.
He stopped several feet away, noticing how the mare kept shifting her weight without taking a single stride backward.
A faint flutter of white fur shifted beneath the timber, nestled deep within a sunken cavity in the earth.
Uncovering The Hidden Trap
The man crouched low into the sodden grass, planting his boots firmly in the soft ground beside the log.
Tucked directly under the heavy trunk lay a newborn foal, completely white and wedged upright inside a narrow trench.
Only the small creature’s ears and muzzle poked out from beneath the thick wood. The cavity hugged the young animal’s ribs so tightly that it could not kick its legs or roll onto its side.
The grey mare lowered her nose right beside the man’s shoulder, exhaling warm breath against the cold air as she watched.
The man wedged both hands beneath the log, testing its weight against the damp suction of the mud.
He braced his forearms against the bark and pressed upward, creating just enough clearance over the little animal’s back.
The foal blinked against the daylight, resting its chin quietly against the lip of the trench while the timber shifted above it.
Lifting Against The Weight Of The Earth
With his feet set wide, the man leaned forward and slipped both arms around the foal’s chest and shoulders.
He gripped the soft white coat, feeling the small ribcage rise and fall in rapid, shallow breaths.
The mare extended her neck and touched her lips directly against the crown of the foal’s head.
Planting his heels into the mud, the man gathered his strength and pulled upward in one fluid motion.
The foal’s front legs slid free from the pit first, scraping along the muddy embankment as its weight cleared the hole.
Its long, pale limbs unfolded awkwardly into the open air, searching for purchase on the grass.
The man held the foal upright against his chest for a second until its small hooves touched solid earth.
Reunion On The Open Hillside
The little horse swayed on wobbly ankles, blinking as the dirt loosened from its clean white coat.
The mare stepped forward instantly, pressing her wide muzzle against the side of the foal’s neck.
She gave a soft nudge that guided the young animal forward, steadying its balance across the muddy slope.
The foal gathered its footing, hopped over the exposed trench, and matched its mother’s measured pace toward the green pasture beyond.
