A Sudden Kick on the Pavement
A white sneaker swung forward and struck the plastic paint bucket, sending bright turquoise liquid pooling across the stone walkway.
The older woman gripped her paintbrush mid-stroke, her mouth parting open as turquoise spread between the patio slabs.
Beside her stood a golden retriever, ears upright, watching the young woman in the white blazer turn her back and stride toward the street.
The older woman lowered herself onto a wooden stool near the half-painted wall. She rested her cheek against her palm, letting the brush dip toward the wet stones.
A Roll in the Wet Puddle
The golden retriever lowered his front shoulders to the stone.
With a sudden shift of weight, the dog dropped onto his side and dragged his flank straight through the turquoise pool.
The older woman reached out with open palms, calling out as turquoise coated the dog’s fur from shoulder to tail.
He scrambled back onto four legs, leaving pale blue paw prints pressed into the dry flagstones.
Shaking his coat once, he trotted through the open gate and straight out onto the sunny neighborhood sidewalk.
Behind him, the older woman hurried to the gatepost, waving her brush as the blue paw prints trailed down the asphalt.
The Mark on the Clean White Door
Down the curb, the woman in the blazer stood beside a spotless white sedan, her thumbs tapping against a phone screen.
The retriever approached quietly, planting blue-tipped paws at the curb right behind her heels.
Before she looked up from her screen, the dog raised both front paws and pressed them flat against the white metal door panel.
He dragged his wet flank along the vehicle’s paint, leaving two dark blue paw impressions and a wide turquoise smear across the side.
The car owner snapped her head around, her phone dropping to her fingertips as she stared at the fresh marks.
Her jaw dropped, her voice rising as she pointed directly at the wet paint drying on the door handle.
Reaching Down to the Culprit
The older woman caught up to the curb, slightly out of breath, and knelt beside the front bumper.
She placed both hands on the retriever’s golden coat, smoothing down the blue-tinted fur along his back.
The woman in the blazer remained upright by the driver door, looking down at the turquoise paw shapes marked across the white finish.
