A Public Dismissal
A man swirled amber liquor in a lowball glass and rested his palm on the woman’s shoulder.
He leaned into her ear in front of eight dinner guests seated around a polished mahogany table. His American flag lapel pin caught the chandelier light as he chuckled to the room.
He told the table she only flew planes inside a computer simulator. He gripped her shoulder tighter, urging her to agree with his assessment.
The woman turned her head toward him, keeping her chin level and her shoulders back.
She told him directly that he was mistaken. Across the white linen tablecloth, a woman in maroon stopped her wine glass halfway to her mouth.
Drawing The Line
The man took a sip of his drink and insisted she sat behind a screen pretending to fly.
He held his stance beside her chair, towering over the guests who held their silverware suspended over half-eaten plates.
The woman did not shift her weight or pull away from his side. She pointed out that he had never bothered to ask what her actual duties were.
He answered swiftly, claiming he already understood her routine. His tone stayed flat and dismissive as he swept a glance across the politicians and officers seated before them.
She met his gaze without backing down, telling him he had simply made up his own story.
He dared her to correct him in front of the entire gathering.
The Cockpit Truth
The room went quiet except for the clinking of a fork resting against fine porcelain. An older man at the end of the table set down his napkin.
The woman stated clearly that she flew military aircraft. A sharp gasp came from a seated woman who brought a manicured hand to her chest.
The man in the suit scoffed and tried to claim she merely worked near the flight line. He leaned forward, trying to maintain control of the conversation.
She corrected him again, stating she personally operated the controls. She named the exact combat aircraft she commanded: the A-10 Thunderbolt.
The men across the table stared directly at her, their postures stiffening against the chair backs. The man with the glass stopped smiling, his forehead furrowing as he absorbed the name of the tank-buster jet.
He leaned in close, demanding to know what call sign she answered to while airborne.
The woman kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, her lips parted slightly as the room waited for her reply.
