Border Collie Races To Alert Railway Worker Before Approaching Train Arrives

A Cold Nudge on the Wooden Ties

The border collie pushed its black muzzle against the curled red hair resting across the railroad cross tie. The woman lay flat on her back, boots pointed toward the sky, eyes shut completely against the afternoon light. Her hands rested limp in the loose gravel between the rails.

A distant pair of headlamps cut through the trees along the straightaway behind them. The dog pawed at her sleeve twice, then stepped back onto the ballast stones and let out two sharp barks. When her head remained turned to the side, the animal spun around and broke into a fast run down the gravel embankment.

Seeking Help Along the Line

Four hundred yards down the track stood a small weathered maintenance shack. A line inspector in a high-visibility orange vest and a tan work cap stood outside, sorting through a steel toolbox set on the dirt.

The dog reached the timber doorway at full sprint and planted both front paws firmly against the worker’s canvas trousers. The man lowered his wrench and peered down into the animal’s brown eyes as the dog whimpered and spun toward the rails. The inspector straightened his back, reached into the open tool stall, and grabbed a round wooden stop paddle painted bright red.

Both worker and dog turned immediately toward the open corridor of the tracks. The man broke into an awkward run, his heavy work boots crunching loudly over the uneven ballast stones as the animal pulled ahead to lead the path.

A Threat Emerging from the Timber

Back along the ties, the woman remained completely still as dry leaves drifted over her jeans. From the edge of the autumn timber, a mountain lion stepped silently across the steel rail, lowering its head toward the motionless figure.

The collie crested the small rise first, barking furiously and placing its body squarely between the cat and the woman’s head. The inspector arrived seconds behind, raising the red paddle high into the air with one hand while shouting toward the brush. The large cat paused mid-stride, flicked its long tail, and backed slowly toward the golden yellow aspens before vanishing into the tree line.

The rumble through the steel tracks grew louder as the diesel engine rounded the final bend. The worker held the red signaling paddle directly in the center of the right-of-way, waving it side to side in wide, deliberate arcs. Up in the cab, the engineer applied the emergency line brakes, sending a hiss of released air along the undercarriage.

A Slow Breath on the Rails

The train ground to a full halt several yards back from the sleepers, its headlights reflecting off the gravel. The worker dropped to both knees beside the fallen woman and tossed the red sign into the weeds.

The dog pressed its wet nose against her chin once more. Her eyelids fluttered open, her breathing hitched, and she pushed her palms into the ballast to lift her shoulders off the wooden ties. Her eyes drifted wide with confusion as she took in the massive grille of the stopped locomotive directly ahead.

The inspector placed a steady, gloved hand onto the shoulder of her denim shirt, while the border collie sat down beside her elbow with its tongue panting lightly in the mountain air.
