An Urgent Tug
The tan dog clamped her teeth onto the hem of the man’s jeans and yanked backward with both paws planted in the grass.
She let out a sharp bark, released the denim, and spun toward the open gate at the back of the lawn.
The man paused on the concrete path, rubbing his ankle before taking a step in her direction.
She bounded a few paces forward, stopped on the walkway, and turned her head to check if he was tracking behind her.
As soon as his sneakers hit the turf, she sprinted through the wooden gate and disappeared into the shaded side alley.
Following The Call
He pushed through the gate latch and broke into a jog down the narrow dirt corridor.
Green shrubs crowded both sides of the fence line, brushing against his arms as he ran.
Ahead of him, the dog kept up a steady pace, looking over her shoulder every few strides to ensure he kept up.
She stopped abruptly beside a wire fence partition pinned against the wooden border.
Her tail wagged in quick, low twitches as she nudged her snout toward the bottom edge of the wire grid.
A Delicate Extraction
A small, brown pup sat wedged beneath the bottom metal strand, unable to wiggle forward or back.
The puppy’s ears were pinned flat against its skull, tiny front paws resting motionless on the damp earth.
The man dropped both knees into the grass and reached out with bare hands.
He gripped the taut wire mesh above the puppy’s shoulders and pulled upward with steady force.
The metal gave way inch by inch, widening the gap between the wire square and the dirt.
Sliding his palms under the pup’s chest, he carefully eased the small body forward through the opening.
The pup slipped free of the fence and tumbled onto the soft grass beneath the man’s hands.
Reunited In The Yard
The mother immediately pressed her nose against the pup’s face, licking its muzzle with rapid, light strokes.
She circled the little dog, sniffing its back and nudging it toward the safety of the path.
The puppy took its first wobbly steps across the lawn, matching pace right beside her.
The man stayed crouched on the grass, watching as both dogs trotted side by side back toward the wooden gate.
