Can A Park Visitor Approach A Trapped Bald Eagle Safely?

A Frantic Splash In The Shallows

Heavy dark wings slapped against the surface of the pond, sending cold water spraying over the shoreline rocks.

A mature bald eagle churned the water, its yellow hooked beak pointed toward the bank while thick green nylon rope pinned both of its feet together.

A young woman crouched on the flat boulders above the water line, resting her hands on her knees as she watched the raptor thrash against the weighted cord.

Strollers and families along the paved path stopped behind her, forming a quiet semi-circle beneath the trees.

The bird lunged forward once more, but the soaked cords snagged hard against the submerged stone, keeping its feathers dragging through the shallows.

Moving Within Striking Distance

She extended an open palm toward the surface, keeping her fingers low and speaking in a low murmur.

The eagle flared its wings wide, churning a white foam ring across the murky water as it tracked her moving hand.

Rather than pulling back, she adjusted her footing on the slippery rock face and leaned further out over the bank.

She slipped both bare hands beneath the bird’s wet body, securing its broad primary feathers directly against its sides to keep the wings from snapping.

With a short grunt, she pulled the waterlogged raptor up from the pond bed, absorbing the full weight of the heavy raptor against her chest.

She carried the bird past the jagged stones and set it gently onto the patch of grass beside the asphalt trail.

Untangling The Talons

The eagle settled onto its breast feathers on the lawn, panting with its beak parted while keeping its head turned toward her face.

Its bright yellow feet were bound tightly in multiple coils of tangled marine cord that had locked both sets of talons together.

She reached into her pocket and produced a small pair of blue plastic-handled scissors.

She sank down onto both knees right beside the eagle, leaning over the sharp talons with the blades open.

Working one strand at a time, she wedged the metal tips between the yellow scales and the stubborn nylon weave.

The bird held completely still on the turf, blinking its pale yellow eyes as the scissors snipped through the braided line with crisp snapping sounds.

She gathered the severed green fibers into her fingers and pulled them free from the curved black claws until the pile dropped onto the path.

Taking To The Air

The eagle shifted its weight back onto its feet, lifting one leg and spreading its long yellow toes across the grass.

It stretched its wings straight out, ruffled the damp brown plumage along its back, and turned toward the open water.

With two heavy lunges across the turf, the bird kicked hard off the shoreline and lifted cleanly into the air.

Its white tail feathers flashed against the gray sky as its dark silhouette cast a sharp reflection over the mirror surface of the pond below.
