A Struggle on the Curb
The German shepherd dug her paws into the rough asphalt, clamping her teeth gently around the tiny pup’s neck. Semi-trucks roared by only feet away, shaking the concrete edge where she stood.
Beneath her front paws lay an iron storm drain grate. Wedged directly between the heavy metal bars was a tiny ball of brown fur, kicking its back legs in midair.
The adult dog pulled backward with all her weight, trying to haul the little one upward through the narrow gap. The puppy let out small whines, its ribcage catching against the cold steel slats.
Every time a tractor-trailer rumbled past, the dog shifted her footing. She refused to let go, readjusting her bite on the loose scruff while keeping her body angled between the traffic and the hole.
An Approaching Shadow
Heavy boots scuffed against the shoulder gravel as an officer in a dark uniform walked toward the scene. Behind him, cars slowed into a steady crawl along the multi-lane roadway.
The officer pulled black protective gloves over his hands as he closed the distance. He lowered himself to one knee beside the drain, keeping his posture low and slow.
The shepherd whipped her head around instantly. Her upper lip curled back, exposing white teeth in a sharp, guttural snap right toward his reaching fingers.
The officer pulled his hand back two inches and paused on his knee. He kept his shoulders dropped, avoiding sudden movement as the shepherd stood rigid over the opening.
“Calm down, calm down, it’s okay,” the officer murmured, his tone even and level. “I’m here to help.”
Hands on the Grate
The shepherd took a stiff step back, though her amber eyes never left his hands. Her breathing came fast, chest expanding against the gray highway air.
With the mother watching every millimeter, the officer leaned in over the iron bars. He rested his left knee on the curb to balance his weight.
The puppy stared up from the darkness of the drain, its tiny front paws resting weakly on the rusted metal edge. The officer extended both gloved palms slowly, keeping them flat.
He slid his fingers down into the space between the bars, working his hands beneath the pup’s soft belly. He gripped the small torso firmly to ensure the legs did not twist against the steel.
With one smooth, upward lift, he brought the puppy up through the grate. The tiny dog’s hind paws cleared the iron slots without catching.
Back to the Grass
The officer set the pup down directly onto the flat pavement beside him. The little dog wobbled for a split second, testing its footing on the solid ground.
The shepherd lunged forward with her nose down, brushing her muzzle across the pup’s ears and flank. She checked every inch of the small body with rapid nudges.
The puppy gave a shake, found its balance, and trotted briskly alongside the adult dog’s front legs. Together, they turned away from the drop-off and headed down the curb toward the safety of the grassy embankment.
The officer remained resting on one knee by the storm drain, his hands resting on his thighs as he watched the two tails disappear along the roadside.
