Lying Beside the Pavement Trash
The elderly man gathered stacks of banded banknotes, stuffed them into a crinkled black garbage bag, and tied the plastic tightly between his knees. He set the bag beside a piece of scrap cardboard and lay flat on his back along the pedestrian brick walk.
His bare feet pointed toward the empty street while his arms rested limp on the cobblestones. He closed his eyes, his breathing slow and shallow as the cold ground pressed against his worn jacket.
A man in a tan shirt came jogging around the street corner, clutching an open bottle of water. He halted right at the elderly man’s feet, tilted the plastic bottle, and let a stream of water splash directly over the resting man’s worn shorts and skin.
The runner threw his head back, laughing out loud into the empty lane before casually strolling away with his half-empty bottle.
Passed by in the Rain
Moments later, a suited professional walked briskly past the cardboard mat. As he approached the still figure, he lifted a fist to his nose, curled his upper lip, and veered toward the brick wall to avoid stepping near.
Clouds began to darken overhead, and rain started tapping against the wet street. Two young women jogged through the drizzle, stopped abruptly at the man’s feet, pointed, and ran off laughing down the walkway.
Another man hurried past wearing a leather jacket, pulling out a smartphone to snap several quick photos of the motionless figure before pocketing the device and marching away.
The rain fell steadily now, soaking into the elderly man’s ragged sleeves and dripping from his gray beard. He remained completely motionless on the damp cardboard, eyes closed against the downpour.
A Kneeling Figure in the Storm
Footsteps splashed through the standing puddles from the far end of the alleyway. A woman wearing torn jeans, hiking boots, and a soaked canvas backpack slowed her pace as she noticed the figure on the bricks.
She stepped closer, peering down at his face as water dripped from the brim of her hair. She dropped down onto both knees right in the wet grime beside him.
Her hand reached forward, placing two trembling fingers lightly against the fabric of his sleeve. She leaned in close, checking his chest to see if he was still breathing, her shoulders trembling under the soaking rain.
She whispered asking if he was hurt, placing both hands gently along his arm to help steady him against the cold ground.
The Opening of the Bag
The older man’s eyelids fluttered open, and he sat up straight on the cardboard, looking directly into her face. He reached down with both hands and pulled the black garbage bag onto his lap, untying the plastic handles.
He peeled back the plastic layers, reached inside, and gripped a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills. He pushed the bundled cash into her hands, pressing his fingers over hers to close her grip around the notes.
Her mouth fell open as she looked down at the money in her lap. She brought both hands up to cover her mouth and nose, her chest hitching as she broke down crying in front of him.
The man smiled warmly, his weathered hands resting quietly on his knees as the young woman sat clutching the bag against her wet jacket in the rain.
