A Forest Driver Steps Out When A Deer Flags Her Down

A Tap Against The Glass

A woman turned her steering wheel slightly, watching a deer press its snout toward the driver-side window while pacing the vehicle’s speed along the roadside.

She brought the van to a halt on the pine needle shoulder. The doe kept her brown eyes locked on the cab, her ears twitching forward each time the driver shifted in her seat.

Unbuckling her seatbelt, the driver reached for the handle and pushed the heavy metal door outward. Her white sneakers hit the damp carpet of fallen needles as she stepped out into the misty air.

The doe did not flinch or retreat into the thick tree line. Instead, she took three deliberate paces forward, nudging her nose against the woman’s gray jacket before pivoting sharply toward the rear of the vehicle.

Following The Leading Steps

The woman smoothed her sweatshirt and turned to track the animal’s path. Every few strides, the deer stopped, angled her neck backward, and waited until footsteps sounded behind her.

The doe moved directly toward the back bumper where the van’s tailgate rested open. Resting on the flatbed platform sat an open green plastic crate.

Inside the crate, brown fur rested motionless against the slotted plastic walls. The doe planted her front hooves near the bumper, stretching her neck upward and nudging the rim of the container with rapid, shallow breaths.

The woman stepped up onto the gravel apron, leaning over the lowered metal tailgate to peer into the crate. A small fawn lay curled on its side, its slender legs tucked tightly against its belly.

Freeing The Paws

The fawn’s black nostrils flared, but its small body remained pinned against the corners of the plastic structure. Its hind leg was wedged firmly into the crate’s narrow drainage grid.

The woman extended both hands, resting her palms lightly against the fawn’s flank to keep the animal still. She leaned her weight forward, working her fingertips down between the plastic ribs to reach the trapped joint.

With her thumb and index finger, she gripped the tiny split hoof, tilting it at an angle to ease the caught edge free from the plastic latch. She gave a firm, controlled tug, and the hoof slipped out of the crevice with a dull click.

She held the hoof up momentarily to inspect the dark, smooth surface of the pads for any open tears or cuts. Feeling no fractures along the slender shin bone, she slid both arms fully beneath the fawn’s ribcage and chest.

Reunion On The Roadside

She lifted the young animal straight out of the box, hugging its lightweight frame against her torso. The fawn dangling its long, delicate legs quietly as she carried it two steps toward the road.

She bent her knees and lowered the fawn until its four hooves touched the pine-covered ground. The mother doe stepped forward instantly, lowering her snout to press her nose against the young one’s ears and forehead.

The fawn shook its coat, took three wobbly strides beside the doe’s flank, and followed her into the row of tall pine trunks. The driver stood with her hands resting at her sides by the tailgate, watching the two brown coats disappear into the thick gray fog.
