Family Secret Surfaces When A Matriarch Questions A Contract During Nuptials

A Folded Sheet on Marble

The matriarch in the emerald gown pulled a folded sheet of white parchment from her clutch and held it out toward her eldest son.

Daniel shifted his weight on the polished marble floor and took the paper with both hands. His mother kept her gaze level, her chin slightly raised as she demanded he read the name penned at the bottom.

Daniel smoothed the creases along the center fold. His eyes moved down the lines of formal text, skipping the typed paragraphs until his gaze stopped at the bottom right corner.

His lips parted, but no words came out except a quiet murmur directed at the woman standing before him.

The Signature Exposed

The matriarch stepped back half an inch, smoothing the front of her dark satin dress before raising her voice just enough for the guests nearby to hear. She informed him that her attorney had reviewed the entire document that morning.

Behind them, near the floral arch, the groom in the ivory tuxedo pulled his shoulders back, his mouth opening in disbelief. The bride beside him pressed a palm against her chest, her fingers clutching the lace of her veil.

Phones rose among the guests standing beside the tall chandeliers. Daniel let his arms sink to his sides, his chest hitching beneath the black lapels of his tuxedo.

His knuckles loosened. The legal paper slipped past his fingertips and fluttered down onto the white stone between their polished shoes.

Words Beside the Arch

Daniel’s eyes grew wet as his chin dropped toward his collar. He tried to explain that his intentions had been about guarding the family name, but his voice broke midway through the sentence.

His mother stepped closer, leaning inward so only those within arm’s reach could hear her reply. She pointed out that his eyes had remained on the property rather than the people standing inside it.

Daniel wiped a hand across his cheek, breathing heavily as he struggled to compose himself in front of the dozens of watching eyes.

The groom moved forward from the alter, crossing the small space separating them. He extended his right hand and rested it firmly against Daniel’s shoulder.

An Extended Hand

Ethan looked into his older brother’s eyes and told him plainly that he was still his brother, asking him to remain for the ceremony.

Daniel nodded once, his lower lip trembling as he pulled his elbows inward and let out a long breath.

The matriarch stepped to the center of the floor, standing between the newlyweds beneath the glow of the crystal chandelier.

Ethan reached out his hand and closed his fingers around the bride’s palm, while the legal document remained lying flat against the cream marble tiles below their polished shoes.
