A Sudden Crash On A Wet Street
A speeding car plowed through a deep roadside puddle, throwing a thick wall of dirty water straight into a wooden display stand.
The impact knocked the makeshift counter sideways, pitching ripe bananas onto the wet asphalt. A thin sheet of clear plastic fluttered off the fruit and settled into the gutter.
Behind the wreckage sat an elderly woman wrapped in a thin grey hooded shawl and a transparent rain poncho. Both of her hands gripped the rims of her wheelchair as cold water ran down her wrinkled cheeks.
Her lips trembled while she stared at the scattered yellow fruit lying across the muddy street. A small plastic cup holding a few crumpled paper notes remained clutched against her chest.
Footsteps splashed against the wet pavement as a man in a dark leather jacket walked up beside her. He slowed down, his eyes dropping to the smashed wooden crates resting against the curb.
“Please help me,” she whispered, her chin trembling as she looked up toward him.
“Don’t worry, I will help you,” the man answered, bending down beside her front wheel.
Gathering What Remained
He knelt on the wet ground, pulling a large burlap sack open with both hands. He reached down and lifted the fallen bunches of fruit one by one, shaking off the stray drops of rainwater before sliding them inside.
His fingers worked quickly, gathering every stray banana scattered across the asphalt until the street corner was completely clear. He straightened the overturned wooden boards and pushed them out of the roadway.
The elderly woman watched every motion, her breath coming in slow, uneven intervals. Her knuckles softened their grip on the wheels of her chair.
The man reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a stack of paper bills. He folded the bills neatly and held them out toward her open palms.
She reached forward, pressing her fingers against his as she took the money. She nodded twice, her shoulders loosening as she whispered her thanks into the damp air.
The man pulled the heavy mouth of the burlap sack tight and hoisted it against his chest. He turned down the empty road, carrying the heavy load beneath the grey clouds.
A Path Deep Into The Forest
Water dripped steadily from electrical cables overhead as the man marched away from the residential sidewalks. He adjusted his grip on the sack, holding the weight securely with both forearms.
The paved street gave way to dirt, and the houses faded into dense green foliage. Massive trees lined the narrow trail, their branches dripping moisture onto thick ferns below.
High above the path, small heads leaned forward from the canopy. Dozens of grey macaque monkeys shifted along the wet bark, their eyes tracking the heavy sack slung across the man’s chest.
He stopped in a small dirt clearing surrounded by giant broadleaf plants and mossy roots. Several monkeys climbed down the trunks, dropping onto their knuckles along the forest floor.
The man bent his knees, tipped the burlap opening forward, and shook the sack. A golden cascade of bananas tumbled out, forming a wide heap over the dead leaves.
A rush of monkeys scrambled across the damp ground toward the pile. They grabbed fruit with their hands and feet, scampering up low branches to peel back the skins.
A Gentle Hand In The Leaves
A few yards away, near a moss-covered fallen log, sat a mother monkey holding a tiny baby against her chest. The infant buried its head into her grey fur, clutching tightly to her belly.
She remained sitting on the rotting wood, watching the commotion around the main pile without moving forward. Her dark eyes blinked as other monkeys chattered and bounded into the trees.
The man separated one clean yellow banana from the remaining fruit on the ground. He turned toward the fallen log and approached with slow, measured steps.
He stopped two feet away and bent low at the waist, extending his right arm straight out. He held the fruit steady in his open palm, keeping his shoulders low and relaxed.
The mother monkey leaned forward, sniffing the cool air between them. She reached out a small, grey hand and wrapped her slender fingers around the fruit.
She pulled the banana toward her chest and sat upright on the log, while the man stood watching with his hands resting at his sides.
