A young boy sits alone on a cold, stone bench in the dark of night. He is intensely focused on the ancient book in his hands, unaware of the imposing, older man approaching him from the shadows.
The sudden confrontation — The older man looms over him, his face stern and unmoving behind thick glasses. With a swift, dismissive motion, he snatches the book and tosses it to the ground, scattering the pages into the cold wind. The boy desperately scrambles on the cobblestones, clawing at the loose leaves as if they were his only chance at a future.
The man doesn’t stop there. He uses his cane to push the boy back down, his expression cold and unforgiving. He tells the boy, with a voice as hard as stone, that the book isn’t worth the effort to read. The boy, looking small and defeated in his worn cap, has no choice but to listen.
A turn of events — Just when it feels like the boy’s dignity has been completely stripped away, the man’s demeanor shifts. The stern exterior cracks. He reaches out, placing a firm, grounding hand on the boy’s shoulder and pulling him up from the ground. Instead of casting him aside, he offers his arm as support, leading the boy away from the cold bench and toward the grand, illuminated doors of the university.
The boy walks beside him, eyes wide and filled with confusion, as they step into a world he was never meant to see. They climb stone stairs lined with portraits of history, passing through heavy, locked doors that open with the turn of a brass key. He leads him into a private, wood-paneled reading room that smells of old paper and history.
A new beginning — The man leads him to a desk bathed in the warm, soft glow of a green desk lamp. He places a new, leather-bound volume on the mahogany surface, his eyes locking onto the boy’s. With a final, meaningful gesture, he taps the desk and lets the boy know that this place, and this book, are now his.
The boy sits down, his hands trembling slightly as he touches the book. He realizes that the man hadn’t been tearing him down—he had been testing his resolve to see if he belonged in the halls of the elite.
