The Emergency on the Deck
The golden retriever sprints across the wet metal deck, his claws clicking sharply against the floor. Thick, black smoke pours out of the metal animal stalls, swirling into the gray sky as bright orange flames lick the sides of the containers. The dog reaches the enclosure, barking intensely at the metal bars.
Inside the stalls, several brown horses pull at their leads, their heads thrusting through the openings of the gate. They pull back and lunge forward, eyes wide and white, as the heat pushes against them. The dog stands on his hind legs, paws pressed firmly against the steel, rhythmically striking the chain link with his teeth.
The Captain Intervenes
The golden retriever turns and races down the long, narrow corridor of the ship, his paws skidding slightly on the damp surface. He bursts into the bridge, barking at the captain who stands behind the ship’s wheel. The man leans down, his eyebrows knit together as he looks at the dog, before pushing his chair back and moving toward the door.
The captain moves rapidly, grabbing a heavy sledgehammer from the wall as they head back outside. They run past rows of stacked containers, the sound of the crackling fire growing louder with every step. The man slows his pace as they approach the burning row of stalls, his eyes scanning the chain securing the gate.
Breaking the Chain
The man raises the sledgehammer, his muscles flexing in his forearm as he brings the head of the hammer down onto the padlock. Sparks fly as metal strikes metal, bouncing off the gate and onto the deck. The dog waits nearby, watching the captain, tail tucked slightly as the heat radiates from the fire.
The man swings again, his breath coming out in sharp bursts. The heavy chain finally gives way, falling limp to the floor. He pulls the metal handle, swinging the gate wide open, and steps back as the horses scramble out of the smoke-filled enclosure.
A Safe Arrival
The horses thunder past the man and the dog, hooves clattering against the metal deck as they move toward the open, smoke-free space. The captain tosses the hammer aside and picks up a water hose, aiming a jet of water directly into the roaring flames inside the empty stall.
The golden retriever trots back over to the captain once the immediate danger has subsided. The man drops to his knees on the wet deck and pulls the dog into a firm embrace, resting his head against the dog’s shoulder. Behind them, the group of rescued horses stands calmly in a loose cluster, watching the pair as the flames slowly dim under the steady stream of water.
