A Roadside Encounter
A white goose sits upright on the hot asphalt of a country road, its neck stretched high and its beak open, emitting a series of honks toward an approaching vehicle. Just inches in front of it, a second goose lies completely flat against the dark road surface, its neck extended and its eyes closed, appearing motionless under the glare of the bright sun.
The silver SUV slows to a steady crawl, its front grille looming closer to the birds as they remain fixated in the center of the lane. The vehicle finally comes to a stop just a few feet away from the pair, its engine idling quietly.
The First Response
A man in a light-colored t-shirt and jeans steps out from the driver-side door. He walks toward the geese, his gaze fixed on the bird lying prone on the ground. He reaches the geese and immediately lowers himself into a crouch on the rough surface of the road.
He reaches for a clear plastic water bottle he has brought with him. With deliberate, slow movements, he tilts the bottle, letting a steady stream of water pour out over the head and back of the goose lying on the asphalt. The bird remains still, its body absorbing the cool liquid as it pools on the road surface around its feathers.
The Careful Intervention
The man continues to tilt the bottle, ensuring the water saturates the goose’s coat to help lower its body temperature against the heat radiating from the road. The other goose watches the entire process, its neck held firm, its vocalizations continuing as the man works.
After dousing the bird, the man sets the bottle aside and reaches down, sliding his hands gently beneath the goose’s body. He lifts it from the ground with slow, measured movements, careful to support its weight. He moves the bird toward a plastic container filled with water that sits nearby on the shoulder of the road.
Returning to the Water
He lowers the goose, guiding its beak down toward the liquid in the container. The bird dips its head, drinking deeply while the man continues to hold it securely. He remains crouched there, keeping his hands steady as the goose refreshes itself, the water container providing a moment of relief for the animal.
The man watches the bird closely, his hands never letting go until he is sure the goose has had enough to drink. The camera captures the quiet scene from the ground level, showing the man kneeling next to the plastic container while the goose remains focused on the water, his fingers splayed across its side to offer support.
