The Interaction at the Counter
A young girl in a worn, dusty shirt walks up to the marble counter of a bank. She holds out a small card to the man standing on the other side. The man in the suit looks at the card, his gaze moving from the plastic to the girl’s face. He leans forward, his shoulders shifting as he speaks to her. He holds the card between his thumb and index finger, turning it over while shaking his head.
The man’s mouth moves as he gestures toward the exit. He leans in closer to the girl, his face dropping toward her level. The girl remains still, her hands resting on the cool surface of the counter. She watches his face as he talks, her eyes tracking the movement of his lips. The man turns, his body angling toward the lobby behind them, gesturing for her to walk away.
A Shift in Perspective
The man eventually turns back to the scanner on the counter. He picks up the card again and slides it into the reader. The girl leans slightly forward, her hands flat against the dark stone. A woman standing next to the girl watches the screen closely. The man’s expression changes as the machine emits a faint sound. He looks down at the display, his head tilting to the side.
He stares at the glowing numbers on the screen. His jaw goes slack, and he pulls his shoulders back, standing fully upright. He glances at the woman, then back to the girl. He keeps his eyes on the digital interface for a long moment, the blue light from the display reflecting in his glasses. The man breathes in, his chest rising as he looks at the girl again.
The Revelation of the Truth
The woman standing next to the girl speaks. Her voice is calm, and she gestures toward the screen with an open palm. She explains that the account was established by Victor Hale. She mentions that the funds were left for the girl’s mother in return for care provided during his final months. The girl watches the woman as she delivers this news, her chin tucked slightly toward her chest.
The man’s posture softens completely. He lowers his hands from his chest and lets them rest at his sides. He turns his head toward the girl and nods slowly. The girl continues to look at him, her eyes fixed on his face. He reaches out, resting his hand on the counter near the girl’s sleeve. He speaks to her again, his voice lower and more measured than before.
A New Direction
The man makes a sharp turn toward the workstation behind him. He begins tapping on the keyboard, his eyes fixed on the monitor. He stops, glancing toward the girl to ensure she is still there. He turns back to the machine, his fingers moving rapidly over the keys. The girl stands waiting, her hands clasped together on the edge of the marble.
The man finishes his work and turns back to face the girl. He speaks clearly, giving instructions on the funds now available to her. He leans down, his hands resting on the counter as he looks directly at her. The girl stares at him, her expression unchanging as the room behind them remains occupied by other people. He straightens his suit jacket and pulls his hands from the counter, nodding toward the woman standing beside the girl.
