Rescue Mission Saves Strangled Mother Loon And Her Chicks

A Struggle Against The Plastic

The mother loon flailed, her wings striking the shoreline as she attempted to release the thick, white plastic mesh cinched tight around her neck. Beside her, two downy-feathered chicks stood motionless, their beaks slightly open as they observed the frantic thrashing of their mother.

She twisted her head sharply to the left, then to the right, but the material held firm, digging deep into her neck feathers with every movement. A pile of discarded fish lay just inches away, abandoned in the chaos of her struggle, while a discarded plastic bottle sat nestled in the dirt near her feet.

The bird let out a sharp, guttural cry, her wings expanding and contracting in a rhythmic, desperate motion. She seemed unable to gain any traction against the coarse grass, her body leaning heavily toward the water but held back by the weight and tension of the entanglement.

An Approach From The Shore

A black truck pulled up onto the dirt road behind them, its tires kicking up a fine spray of dust that settled over the shoreline. A man stepped out, his gaze fixed on the birds as he walked toward the water’s edge.

The loon continued to flap, her wings creating a repetitive slapping sound against the earth. As the man approached, she shifted her position, turning slightly to keep the small, defenseless chicks behind the shelter of her wings.

He stopped just a few feet away, dropping into a crouch. He moved his hands slowly, allowing his palms to hover near the bird’s back before reaching for the tangled mess.

Careful Hands Untangle The Knot

The man’s fingers worked with focused precision, hooking into the tight loops of the plastic netting that had buried itself into the loon’s plumage. He pulled the material gently away from her skin, moving inch by inch to avoid snagging the feathers or tightening the grip around her throat.

The loon remained still for a brief moment, her head slightly tilted as he carefully unwound the fibers. He pulled a long, loose strand from the back of her head, tossing it aside to reveal the skin underneath.

With a final, decisive movement, he gathered the remaining plastic loops and pulled them upward, lifting the suffocating weight away from the bird’s neck. The loon’s wings flickered, and she shook her body, the tight tension in her shoulders visibly releasing.

Returning To The Calm Water

The man pulled his hands back, giving the bird a gentle pat on her back. She remained huddled with her chicks for a heartbeat, surveying the area as the plastic lay discarded on the grass behind her.

She stood up fully, unfolding her wings, and took a few steps toward the water. Her movements were no longer obstructed, and she eased herself into the lake, the cool liquid lapping against her feathers as she glided forward.

The chicks followed close behind, paddling alongside her into the deeper, clearer blue. The mother turned her head one last time toward the shore, her body settled low in the water as they drifted away from the land and into the center of the lake.
