A Cliffside Emergency
The woman gripped the black steering wheel with both hands, her knuckles turning white as she sobbed aloud.
She pressed her foot firmly against the brake pedal, hoping to keep the heavy vehicle from sliding forward.
Outside her driver-side window, the red SUV’s front tires hung over empty space, spinning uselessly.
Large chunks of brown dirt and grey rock broke loose from the cliff edge, tumbling hundreds of feet down into the canyon below.
The vehicle tilted at a dangerous forward angle, its rear bumper lifting into the air.
She kept her eyes shut tight for a moment, listening to the sound of pebbles bouncing off the metal body of the car.
Every tiny movement of the chassis caused more dirt to crumble away from beneath the front axle.
The Golden Retriever Steps In
A golden retriever sprinted up the dirt path, its tail low and its ears pinned back against its head.
The dog barked repeatedly, pacing back and forth near the rear bumper of the unstable SUV.
It nudged the plastic bumper with its wet nose as if attempting to hold the heavy machine in place.
When the car shifted slightly, the dog let out a sharp yip and retreated a few steps.
Realizing the vehicle was too heavy to move, the dog spun around and ran back down the winding mountain trail.
It kicked up small clouds of dust as its paws pounded against the loose gravel.
The dog’s chest heaved as it ran, its tongue hanging out the side of its mouth.
Ahead, a man dressed in a red rescue uniform and a bright orange helmet walked along the edge of the path.
The golden retriever leaped into the air, barking loudly and spinning around to face the direction of the cliff.
The rescuer stopped walking, bending down to pat the dog’s head before realizing the urgency in its behavior.
It ran a few yards back up the hill, then stopped and looked over its shoulder to make sure the man was following.
The Rescue Operation
The rescuer immediately turned toward his red utility truck, pulling open the heavy door and climbing into the driver’s seat.
He turned the key in the ignition, and the diesel engine roared to life.
He shifted the vehicle into gear and drove forward, keeping his eyes fixed on the dusty road ahead.
The golden retriever ran ahead of the front tires, guiding the rescue truck toward the crumbling cliffside.
The red truck stopped several yards behind the dangling SUV, its hazard lights flashing.
The rescuer jumped out of the cab, carrying a heavy metal hook and a thick, braided tow strap.
He walked quickly to the rear of the red SUV, bending down to locate the frame hook.
He threaded the metal loop through the frame and secured the locking latch with a firm twist.
He pulled the strap tight, checking the connection with two quick tugs of his black gloved hands.
Pulling Back to Safety
The metal winch cable groaned as the rescuer activated the mechanism from his truck’s control panel.
The rear tires of the red SUV dragged backward over the loose gravel with a harsh scraping sound.
More rocks slid down the cliff face, but the tow strap held firm under the immense weight.
Slowly, the vehicle’s front wheels crawled back onto solid ground, clearing the edge of the deep drop-off.
The rescuer secured the winch and walked to the driver’s side of the SUV, opening the door.
The woman stepped out of the vehicle, her knees shaking as her feet touched the dirt.
She dropped to her knees on the road, wrapping both arms tightly around the golden retriever’s neck.
She buried her face in the dog’s thick golden fur, her shoulders rising and falling with heavy breaths.
The dog wagged its tail rapidly, licking her face while the firefighter stood nearby and watched.
