A Roadside Struggle
The heavy coils of a patterned python squeezed tightly around the torso of a mature bald eagle flat on the gravel shoulder.
Right beside the pinned predator, three fluffy grey chicks stood with their yellow beaks stretched wide, emitting high-pitched chirps.
The eagle’s yellow beak remained pressed close to the weeds, its wings pinned flat against the dirt by the snake’s thick body.
Cars sped past on the adjacent asphalt, their tires kicking up small pebbles toward the struggling birds.
The snake’s glossy skin shimmered under the grey sky as it shifted its weight, tightening its hold with every breath the bird took.
A Driver Pulls Over
A dark sedan slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder just feet away from the scene.
The driver’s side door swung open, and a man in jeans and a grey t-shirt stepped out onto the pavement.
He shut the door behind him and walked toward the edge of the grass, keeping his eyes on the pile of feathers and scales.
He dropped to his knees in the dirt, placing himself inches away from the snake’s resting head.
The three chicks scrambled back a few inches but kept their eyes fixed on the man’s hands.
He hovered his open palms over the thickest loop of the constrictor, checking for a loose seam in the coils.
Prying the Coils Loose
The man reached out with both hands, gripping the snake just below its head to find leverage against the tight grip.
He pulled backward, but the python’s muscles tightened further around the eagle’s brown chest feathers.
Recognizing the grip was too strong, the man reached to the side and grabbed a thick wooden branch from the brush.
He wedged the flat tip of the branch between the snake’s body and the eagle’s side.
He leaned his weight into the wood, prying the heavy coils upward away from the bird’s ribs.
The python slid up the wood, releasing its hold on the bird’s wings as the man lifted the branch high.
The eagle shifted its weight, pulling its wings free from the deflated loop of the snake’s body.
The man hoisted the writhing snake high into the air with the stick, keeping the head far from his face.
Water on the Gravel
The man carried the snake on the stick away from the shoulder and tossed it deep into the tall grass.
Returning to the roadside, he pulled a clear plastic bottle of water from his vehicle.
He set a small metal bowl on the gravel right in front of the three waiting chicks.
He tilted the bottle, letting a steady stream of water splash into the bottom of the dish.
The chicks stepped forward together, dipping their small yellow beaks into the cool water.
The adult eagle stood upright nearby, its white-feathered head turning slightly as it watched the babies drink from the bowl.
The man knelt quietly beside them, holding the plastic bottle steady as the water level rose.
