A Sudden Grab Outside the Bakery
A muscular man stepped through the glass front doors of the bakery, clutching a filled paper bag against his chest.
As his sneakers hit the sidewalk pavement, a black Labrador darted from around the corner, clamped its jaws around a loaf of bread sticking out of the top, and yanked it clear.
The man gasped and looked down at his lightened bag, his face tightening in confusion and irritation.
He shouted after the animal and pointed a finger down the street as the dog accelerated along the concrete path with the bread held firmly in its teeth.
Without taking his eyes off the dark shadow moving down the sidewalk, the athletic man sprinted into action, his feet pounding heavily against the ground.
Following the Dog Beyond the Security Gates
The black dog sprinted around a corner, turning away from the public sidewalk and heading toward an industrial lot surrounded by chain-link fencing.
A bright red sign marked with white block lettering reading NO ENTRY hung on the open metal gate.
The man slowed his pace as he crossed through the gated perimeter, his head shifting side to side as he scanned the overgrown pavement and concrete debris.
He pushed through an open doorway into a cavernous, unfinished building constructed of bare concrete walls and broken glass windows.
Dust motes floated in the gray light streaming through shattered windowpanes as the man walked deeper into the silent structure.
An Unexpected Scene Inside the Broken Building
In the center of the open room sat an elderly man resting in a manual wheelchair.
His green fatigue jacket was faded, and two prosthetic legs extended down to the footrests of his chair.
The black dog walked straight up to the sitting man, sitting on its hind legs and resting the plastic-wrapped loaf of bread directly onto the older man’s lap.
The older man reached out a weathered hand and gently stroked the top of the dog’s black head, his mouth forming a quiet smile.
He slowly unsealed the plastic wrapper with both hands, broke off a thick chunk of bread, and lifted it up to take a bite.
Standing in the doorway shadows, the runner stopped dead in his tracks, his arms dropping to his sides as he watched the dog lean its neck against the wheelchair wheel.
Returning with More Than Enough to Share
The runner quietly turned around, retracing his steps back through the chain-link gate and out onto the main street.
Minutes later, he walked back into the warm light of the bakery, handing cash across the wooden counter to the baker.
He stepped out again carrying a large, heavy brown paper sack stuffed with multiple freshly baked baguettes protruding from the top.
He walked back through the broken doorway of the concrete building, holding the oversized bag out in front of him with both hands as he approached the wheelchair.
The elderly man looked up in surprise as the younger man set the stuffed bag down and smiled, while the black dog sat up on the floor and let out a bright bark.
