Standing Kangaroo Watches As Driver Steps Toward Fallen Joey

A roadside discovery

White cars zipped past the patch of grass where a young kangaroo lay stretched on its side.

Dark red tissue showed along the animal’s flank, surrounded by dark flies gathering on the fur. A few feet away, an adult kangaroo stood upright on its hind legs, watching the asphalt.

Tires rolled by just inches from the animal’s paws. A dark SUV slowed along the outer white line and rolled to a stop on the gravel shoulder.

The driver pushed his door open and stepped down into the grass. He walked slowly toward the animal, keeping his hands low and visible.

Cleaning the open wound

The man crouched on his knees beside the joey and set a white spray bottle down in the grass. His palm rested lightly against the animal’s shoulder to keep it still.

He lifted the nozzle and pressed the trigger, sending a thick cloud of white antiseptic foam across the injured flank. The spray coated the insects and washed away dirt from the exposed skin.

The joey’s back leg twitched slightly against the dry soil. The adult kangaroo shifted its weight from one foot to the other, keeping its dark eyes locked on the man’s hands.

Reaching into his supplies, the rescuer unscrewed a plastic bottle filled with clear cleansing solution. He tilted the spout down and squeezed the liquid directly across the red tissue.

The joey opened its mouth and tilted its head back toward the sky. The man kept his left hand flat against the animal’s chest, speaking in low murmurs while the liquid drained into the grass.

Dressing the injury

The man peeled open a sterile gauze pad and pressed the white square directly over the raw center of the injury. He held steady downward pressure with two fingers.

With his free hand, he unrolled a broad white elastic bandage. He slid one end beneath the joey’s ribs, guiding the fabric smoothly beneath the animal’s belly.

He lifted the joey’s torso slightly with his forearm, wrapping the tight white layers across the animal’s ribs and back. Strip by strip, the bandage covered the white gauze completely.

The joey pushed against the ground with its front paws and lifted its head. It pulled its hind legs beneath its frame, balancing upright on the roadside verge.

A shared meal on the shoulder

The man sat back on his heels and reached into his jacket pocket. He held out an open palm filled with dry pellets and chopped food.

The joey leaned its neck forward, extending its dark nose toward the man’s skin. Its mouth worked steadily as it took the feed directly from his open hand.

The adult kangaroo stood directly beside them, lowering its ears as the joey finished the last pieces from the man’s palm.
