A Rough Hand at the Counter
A cook thrust his fingers against the worn fabric of an elderly man’s field jacket and shoved him backward. The older man staggered slightly on the tiled diner floor, his hands rising to steady himself.
Pinned to the faded olive green coat were multiple military ribbons and medals. The cook leaned in close, his face inches from the elderly man’s cheek, demanding that the metal pins be stripped from the jacket immediately.
The older man gripped the cook’s wrist, keeping the stranger’s fingers away from the chest pocket. He spoke softly, stating simply that the decorations belonged to him and that he had only come in to get a meal.
Stepping Between the Two Men
A waitress hurried out from behind the counter, placing herself between the cook’s broad frame and the older patron. She extended both hands, pushing the cook back toward the grill line while telling him to leave the customer alone.
The cook shoved past her arm and grabbed the veteran by the collar, pulling the fabric taut across his shoulders. He pointed toward the exit doors and shouted that the man was barely able to stand on his own feet.
The older man pulled his jacket straight and stepped forward, refusing to drop his gaze. When the cook reached out a second time to rip a cross-shaped medal from the lapel, the older man knocked the hand aside.
A Look at the Card
The veteran reached inside his coat pocket and slid out a small, worn leather credential holder. He placed it directly onto the wooden tabletop in front of the cook.
The cook picked up the folded leather and flipped it open with his thumbs. The waitress leaned over his shoulder, her eyes scanning the official laminate inside.
Her eyebrows raised as she read the rank printed across the card out loud. The cook’s mouth fell open, his eyes fixed on the photograph and the official designation stamped across the plastic.
The Final Word
The cook’s shoulders dropped as he slowly lifted his head to look at the man standing across the booth. His fingers remained pressed against the edges of the open wallet.
The older man placed his palm flat over the rank insignia pinned to his collar. He looked straight into the cook’s eyes and repeated the title printed on the card.
