A Cold Reception at the Counter
The salesman crossed his arms and stepped directly between the glass case and the visitor. His dark tailored suit remained sharp, but his eyes narrowed as he pointed toward the exit.
The older man in the worn brown jacket stood quietly. His weathered hands rested near his sides while the salesman told him to look elsewhere.
“I didn’t come here to window shop,” the older man replied, his voice calm and steady. The employee simply raised an eyebrow, pointing an accusatory finger toward the polished floor.
The employee demanded proof of funds before offering any assistance. He shook his head, motioning toward the entrance with visible impatience.
The Unopened Leather Case
Rather than turning to leave, the customer reached deep into his inner coat pocket. The clerk watched his hand, tapping his own wrist watch as if counting the seconds.
The older man withdrew a small, snap-buttoned leather case. He unfastened the clasp with steady fingers and set the container down beside the glass case.
He unfolded a crisp set of official documents across the glass surface. The salesman leaned in slightly, his sharp posture starting to falter as the papers smoothed out.
A female store manager stepped out from the back office, glancing at the documents on the counter. Her eyes widened the second she read the signature on the top page.
A Sudden Change in Atmosphere
The manager pointed a trembling finger directly toward the older customer. “You’re him,” she stammered, looking back and forth between the two men.
The salesman’s mouth fell open. He glanced down at the case in his hands, then up at his supervisor as she revealed who was standing in front of them.
The salesman stepped back, his posture slumping as color drained from his face. He stammered an apology, his hands shaking slightly against his lapels.
The older man adjusted the collar of his jacket without raising his voice. He took a deliberate step toward the exit, pausing just beside the display glass.
He looked at the young employee with a calm, steady gaze, closed his leather case, and offered a quiet smile before turning toward the door.
