A Tense Encounter at the Trunk
An elderly man in a worn cap set a brown paper bag down inside his open car trunk outside the grocery store doors. He reached for a second sack when two shoppers in dark coats marched out of the automatic sliding doors directly toward him.
The woman pointed a gloved finger at his bumper, her lips pulling back as she shouted across the asphalt. The man beside her stepped forward, thrusting his hands toward the old sedan and demanding that the vehicle be cleared from the walkway immediately.
The older driver turned with his hands held out low and open, explaining quietly that he was only packing his morning groceries. Neither shopper listened. Instead, the woman reached straight into the open trunk, grabbed a packed paper sack, and flung it onto the pavement.
Apples Rolling Across the Pavement
Cans clattered against the asphalt and red apples scattered across the parking lane. The man in the black coat raised his leather shoe and kicked a remaining brown sack onto its side, spilling bread and produce across the roadway.
The older man sank down onto his knees, his work jacket pulling tight across his shoulders as he reached out with shaking fingers to gather the bruised fruit one by one. The couple stood over him on the curb, laughing as they watched him crawl between the tires.
Behind them, a low rumble vibrated through the concrete as five heavy cruising motorcycles pulled into the parking lot. The engines cut off in unison, leaving only the sound of rolling apples.
Leather Boots on the Asphalt
Five riders wearing heavy black leather jackets and sunglasses dismounted their bikes and stepped onto the driveway. The lead rider walked straight past the couple, planting his heavy black combat boots firmly beside the spilled groceries.
The biker fixed his gaze directly on the standing man and pointed down at the torn paper sacks on the ground. He ordered the couple to clean up every item, pay for the ruined groceries, and speak an immediate apology to the man on the asphalt.
The woman pulled her sunglasses down to her nose, her laughter cutting short as she looked up at the circle of riders. Her partner took a half-step back, his chin dropping toward his chest as his hands slid into his coat pockets.
Restoring Order in the Lot
Both shoppers dropped to their knees on the concrete beside the old sedan. The woman gathered the scattered oranges and loose cans into a cardboard box while the man pulled a stack of bills from his wallet.
The couple stood back up, their eyes fixed on the pavement as the man handed cash directly into the older driver’s weathered hands. After muttering a quick apology, both turned around and walked quickly across the parking lanes toward the far end of the shopping plaza.
The elderly man packed the repaired boxes back into his trunk and pressed the metal lid down until the latch clicked shut.
