A Sudden Trap on a Muddy Path
A red fox poked its head straight up between the narrow steel bars of a heavy drainage grate, pinned firmly in the thick mud below.
Brown water pooled around the opening as the animal pressed its front paws against the wet channel beneath the road.
A few yards away, a second fox stood upright in the muddy vehicle tracks, staring directly toward the trapped animal.
A rescuer dressed in green overalls and thick rubber boots stepped through the ruts, walking directly toward the drainage trench.
Lifting the Heavy Steel Frame
The woman crouched low in the slurry, planting both work boots into the churned earth beside the grate.
She slipped thick yellow work gloves over her hands and reached down toward the outer rim of the steel bars.
Her fingers curled under the iron edge as she shifted her weight to get a secure grip on the mud-slicked metal.
The trapped fox turned its head slightly, its ears flattening as the rescuer began to pull upward.
With a firm pull, the heavy steel frame broke loose from the mud and tilted upward on its side.
Working Free from the Wet Trench
The fox wriggled its shoulders through the opening beneath the elevated grate, pulling its muddy paws forward.
The rescuer kept both hands braced against the raised metal frame, giving the animal ample clearance underneath.
The fox scrambled out from the dark, water-filled channel and stepped out onto the open road.
Once clear of the grate, the animal stood firmly in the muddy puddle and shook its entire body from head to tail.
Water and brown spray flew across the tire ruts as its orange coat fluffed out in the cool air.
Rejoining the Waiting Companion
The freed fox turned away from the rescuer and walked quickly along the grass-lined tire track.
The waiting fox turned its head toward the road ahead, matching the rescued fox’s pace as they moved together.
Both red foxes trotted side by side down the long dirt path toward the distant treeline.
