Mother Deer Paces Pit Where Her Baby Is Trapped Deep Below

Trapped Beneath the Fairway

The baby fawn kicked its tiny hooves against a shifting pile of white golf balls, unable to find traction along the smooth concrete walls of the drainage pit.

Several feet above, the mother deer stepped along the turf edge, lowering her snout toward the opening and calling down softly.

The deep vertical shaft was designed to catch stray golf shots, but the small spotted animal had slipped straight inside.

Every time the fawn attempted to leap upward, its hooves sank deeper into the loose layer of dimpled balls.

A Lifeline on the Green

A golf cart slowed to a stop near the edge of the hole as a groundskeeper stepped out onto the manicured grass.

The mother deer took two quick steps back but kept her dark eyes fixed on the man in the green cap.

He walked forward at a measured pace, keeping his arms low and his movements smooth so as not to startle the doe.

Dropping to his knees at the rim, he peered down into the cylinder where the fawn stood looking up with wide, alert eyes.

The pit was deep enough that reaching the bottom required leaning his entire upper torso over the grassy ledge.

The Delicate Extraction

The man lay flat against the turf, planting his chest firmly against the concrete edge as he extended both hands downward.

His fingers reached past the rim, inching closer to the fawn as the baby remained still against the golf balls.

He slid his palms gently beneath the fawn’s ribcage, securing a firm grip around its fragile spotted body.

With a slow, steady pull, he lifted the light frame straight up out of the darkness and into the bright morning sunlight.

The mother deer stepped forward immediately, closing the distance between them as the man rested on his knees.

Reunited on the Grass

He carefully set the fawn’s hooves down onto the soft green fairway just inches from the mother’s nose.

The doe bent her neck down, pressing her mouth against the baby’s ears and neck in rapid grooming strokes.

The fawn stood firmly on its four legs, shaking its small tail as the man slowly backed away across the grass.

Side by side, the mother deer and her fawn trotted together across the fairway toward the distant tree line while the groundskeeper remained kneeling by the open hole.
