A Vigil by the Locked Door
A golden retriever sat upright on the linoleum floor, clamping the green stem of a yellow sunflower firmly between his teeth.
His eyes stayed fixed on the metal door marked ‘MORGUE – RESTRICTED ACCESS’.
Two medical workers in scrubs stopped in their tracks along the hospital hallway.
The female nurse knelt beside the golden retriever and reached out to smooth down his fur.
She gently tried to nudge him away from the entrance, but his paws remained anchored to the tiles.
Even when staff coaxed him down the corridor, the dog walked straight back to the identical spot.
He laid his chin flat against the cold floor beside a full metal bowl of food and let the sunflower rest beneath his muzzle.
The kibble sat completely untouched as the hours passed.
Three Days in the Hallway
Day turned to evening, and the dog kept watch without shifting his gaze from the grey threshold.
Staff members walked past quietly, occasionally wiping their eyes or pausing to check on him.
A tear traced down the fur beneath the dog’s left eye as he pressed closer to the doorway.
He ignored every gentle whistle, every hand offering treats, and every soft call down the hall.
For three straight days, his posture barely changed.
The hallway lights hummed continuously above him while carts and stretchers rolled in the distance.
On the third morning, the nurse walked up to the station and pulled a medical chart from the metal rack.
Uncovering the Truth
She flipped open the clipboard and ran her finger down the patient admission records.
Her eyes scanned the names and timestamps until her breath caught and her eyebrows pulled tightly together.
The man who had owned the retriever had been brought through those doors three days earlier and had passed away.
The dog had simply followed the path to the last place his owner had been taken.
The nurse closed the chart folder slowly and let her hands rest on top of the counter.
She walked back down the long corridor, stepped in front of the dog, and crouched down to his eye level.
She rested one palm on his head and the other around his shoulder, leaning in close while he looked up into her face.
She picked up the sunflower stem from the floor and held it gently.
A New Direction
The nurse walked out through the automatic exit doors toward the parking lot with the dog stepping right beside her.
She opened the back door of her car, and the retriever climbed onto the back seat.
The dog sat tall behind her, watching out the front windshield as the nurse adjusted the rearview mirror.
The yellow sunflower rested safely across the center console beside the steering wheel.
She turned the key in the ignition and steered the car out onto the suburban road under the bright afternoon sun.
Later that evening, on a wooden front porch, the nurse sat in a rocking chair with the sun sinking low across the yard.
The golden retriever rested his chest and front legs across her lap, closing his eyes as her fingers stroked slowly down his back.
