Can A Stranded Bird Be Saved From Rigid Plastic Trash?

Trapped Against the Cold Ground

The swallow’s dark wings beat rapidly against the gray asphalt, scattering dry autumn leaves across the path.

A thick band of bright red plastic pinched tightly around the bird’s chest, pinning its feathers down and holding its body firmly against the ground.

Every time the tiny animal tried to lift off, the stiff plastic caught its wings, sending it tumbling sideways into the gravel.

Its small beak opened repeatedly, letting out rapid distress calls while its feet scrambled for purchase on the smooth stone.

A shadow fell over the path as a man dressed in a red outdoor jacket knelt down beside the struggling creature.

The Delicate Extraction

He lowered his bare hands toward the pavement, moving slowly so the swallow would not dart away into the brush.

His fingers closed gently around the bird’s glossy blue-black body, securing its thrashing wings against its sides.

With his other hand, the man unfolded the small metal blade of a pocket knife.

He crouched low over the pavement, bringing his face down close to inspect where the rigid plastic pressed against the swallow’s neck and chest.

The red collar offered almost no clearance against the bird’s soft down feathers.

“There we go,” the man whispered softly, holding the bird steady. “Just hold still for me.”

He slid the flat edge of the blade beneath the underside of the red loop, keeping the sharp edge turned entirely away from the bird’s skin.

His knuckles tightened as he braced his thumbs, applying upward pressure against the tough synthetic band.

The swallow shifted in his grasp, turning its dark head from side to side while the metal edge worked through the thick plastic.

Breaking the Plastic Bind

With a clean snap, the plastic ring gave way and split into two pieces.

The man exhaled, pulling the severed loop away from the feathers and setting the tool down on the fallen leaves.

He shifted his grip, turning his hands upright to form an open cup beneath the swallow’s pale belly.

The bird did not bolt immediately.

It rested lightly on his open palms, stretching its neck and shaking out its dark flight feathers one by one.

Its claws gripped his fingertips, testing its balance while feeling the wind moving over the water nearby.

A sudden beat of wings rustled against the man’s fingers as the swallow kicked off his palms and launched into the air.

Rejoining the Autumn Sky

“There you go, fly free,” the man called out, rising to his feet and tracking the tiny silhouette as it climbed above the shoreline.

High above the calm lake, hundreds of swallows circled against a blue autumn sky dotted with white clouds.

The lone bird beat its wings straight upward, banking sharply to merge into the swirling center of the massive flock.

The man stood beside the water in his red jacket, watching the cloud of dark wings drift across the golden trees.
