An Empty Tin on the Pavement
An elderly woman rested her back against a stone wall, extending both cupped hands toward passersby on a sunlit street.
A dented tin cup sat untouched on the cobblestones beside her worn blue skirt.
People walked past in light summer clothes, their eyes focused straight ahead as they moved through the alley.
A man in a navy blazer paused and slipped his hand toward his inner jacket pocket to pull out his wallet.
The woman walking beside him reached out, caught his forearm, and shook her head.
She whispered a quick suggestion, pointed across the walkway, and guided him away from the corner.
An Aisle of Bottled Water
Inside a nearby supermarket, the pair pushed an empty metal cart directly toward the beverage department.
They scanned the towering shelves before locating large multi-packs of sealed plastic drinking water.
The man bent his knees, hoisted a heavy plastic-wrapped bundle from the floor display, and set it firmly inside their cart.
Beside him, the woman pulled out a sheet of brown cardboard and a dark marker, quickly writing across the surface.
They wheeled their haul straight to the cashier, paid for the goods, and carried the heavy supplies out into the sunlight.
Setting Up the Cobblestone Stand
Returning to the stone wall, the man knelt directly on the pavers in front of the elderly woman’s feet.
He lowered the stacked bottles in front of her knees and balanced a rustic wooden crate over the flagstones.
Against the wooden slats, he leaned the cardboard sign reading simply: WATER €1.
He stood up, pulled a bill from his wallet, dropped it into her hand, and took a single bottle from the crate.
He gestured toward the street, stepped back alongside his partner, and walked away down the alley.
A Steady Stream of Steps
Moments later, a young man walking down the passage slowed his pace, looked at the cardboard sign, and fished a coin from his pocket.
He traded the coin for a bottle, nodding toward the seated vendor before moving along.
A woman walking past stopped next, crouching down to hand over change and select a cool bottle from the wood slats.
Soon after, a mother with a small girl in a floral dress stopped at the crate, handing over a coin while letting her daughter take a drink.
On a clean white cloth spread beside the crate, silver coins and folded paper euro notes began to pile up.
The elderly woman gathered the paper bills between trembling fingers, folding the edges neatly into her lap.
Clear tears tracked down the deep creases of her cheeks as the corners of her mouth lifted into a quiet smile.
