A Delicate Operation on Open Asphalt
A mother brown bear clamped her jaws gently around the scruff of a tiny cub and stepped out across the two-lane mountain highway.
Behind her on the gravel shoulder, two other cubs sat upright on their haunches, watching every movement their mother made.
Ahead of them, a car sat idling in the lane, windshield wipers still, while the driver held a steady foot against the brake.
The massive sow kept her head low, adjusting her pace to keep the dangling cub from bumping against the pavement.
She placed each paw flat against the grey surface, moving straight toward the steep green bank on the far side.
One Down, Three to Go
Reaching the opposite shoulder, she leaned forward and lowered her jaw until the cub’s paws met the dirt.
The moment her teeth released the fur, she turned her body around without pausing to sniff the grass.
She crossed the double white lines again, heading right back toward the roadside where the rest of her litter waited.
Three small, dark bundles were huddled tightly together against the ditch, fidgeting as her shadow fell over them.
She selected the nearest one, opening her mouth wide to get a secure grip on the loose skin behind its ears.
The cub curled its tail inward and let its legs dangle limp in mid-air as she hoisted it off the dirt.
Chaos in the Middle Lane
As she carried the second cub toward safety, a third sibling broke away from the ditch and trotted out into the lane.
The small cub stopped directly on the asphalt, sat back on its hindquarters, and threw its head back to emit a high-pitched cry.
Its shrill squeals bounced off the trees on both sides of the roadway.
The mother set down the cub in her jaws near the brush line and turned her heavy frame toward the noise.
She closed the distance in three long strides, stopping nose-to-nose with the stranded youngster sitting on the centerline.
She lowered her snout, nudged the side of the cub’s neck, and clamped down carefully on its neck scruff.
The cub ceased its cries the second her jaw engaged, hanging quietly as she carried it across the remainder of the road.
Heading Into the Brush
She deposited the cub onto the verge beside its siblings, nudging it with her wet snout to push it forward.
All the cubs scrambled together into a tight pack near the edge of the tall forest undergrowth.
The mother stepped in behind them, matching their tiny steps as they pushed through the roadside fern leaves.
One by one, the four small shapes melted into the shadow of the tall pines, followed by the broad brown back of their mother.
