A Sudden Standoff by the Culvert
A man’s heavy work boots crunched against the loose gray gravel as he walked toward the open concrete basin.
A slender doe stood completely stiff beside the edge of the pit, her large brown eyes locked onto his hands.
Instead of bolting into the green canopy behind her, she remained anchored to the gravel trail.
The man slowed his pace, taking measured steps along the edge of the pit.
He bent his knees and leaned over the rough gray rim to inspect the shadowy pit below.
Curled against dry brown leaves at the very bottom lay a tiny fawn, covered in pale spots and unable to scramble up the vertical walls.
The man reached his right arm downward into the opening.
Before his fingers could descend past the concrete edge, the doe sprang forward.
She kicked her front hooves off the dirt, lunging straight toward his chest with her ears pinned flat.
Speaking softly to ease the panic
The man threw both hands into the air and snapped his torso backward onto his heels.
“Wait! Hey!” he called out, his voice sharp and startled as he retreated two paces.
The doe landed hard on the gravel, her nostrils flaring while she stomped her foreleg against the stones.
“Calm down,” the man said, lowering the pitch of his voice to a steady murmur. “Calm down. Easy, girl. Calm down.”
He held his palms open toward her, keeping his chest square and his movements deliberate.
The doe kept her gaze pinned to him, shifting her weight from side to side without retreating into the trees.
The man dropped down onto his haunches, keeping his hands low and visible.
He paused until the doe lowered her head a few inches, watching him without striking forward again.
Carefully, he swung his right boot over the concrete rim and stepped into the pit.
Reaching into the depths
He planted his second boot firmly on the leaf litter beside the baby.
The doe stepped closer to the edge, watching from just inches away above his shoulder.
The man knelt down, sliding his bare hands under the fawn’s small chest and hindquarters.
The fawn let out a faint bleat, kicking its slender legs against his forearms.
He gathered the spotted body against his chest, tucking the long legs securely in his grip.
With one knee pressing against the interior wall, he hoisted himself upward toward the daylight.
He leaned over the ledge, carefully balancing his torso against the mossy rim of the box.
He placed the fawn down on the packed gravel directly beside the doe’s front hooves.
Back into the safety of the woods
The fawn stumbled forward on unsteady legs, wobbling on the uneven stones.
The mother instantly lowered her snout, nudging the fawn’s neck and sides with deep, snuffling breaths.
The man stepped back out of the ditch and stood tall on the roadway, giving them clear space.
The doe turned her body toward the tree line, flicking her white tail twice.
The baby followed right beside her flanks, matching her rhythm step for step.
Both deer trotted up the dirt incline and vanished beneath the green leaves of the forest.
