The Gates of Judgment
I am sorry, but this area is restricted to residents, the man in the sharp blue suit said, his voice dripping with condescension. He did not just stop them; he looked them up and down, his eyes lingering on the old man’s worn denim overalls and the woman’s simple floral dress. To the agent, they looked like tourists who had lost their way—or worse, beggars looking for a handout.
The service entrance is that way, he added with a dismissive wave. He even mocked the old man’s burlap sack, asking if he was collecting change for a bus ride home. The elderly couple stood in silence, enduring the ridicule with a quiet dignity that the man in the suit completely failed to recognize.
A Tale of Two Tastes
Moments later, the agent’s demeanor shifted instantly. A young man stepped out of a sleek silver Ferrari, draped in loud, expensive streetwear and dark sunglasses. You made it! Looking fresh, sir! the agent chirped, bowing low and pressing his hands together in a gesture of extreme respect. He ignored the elderly couple as he ushered this new guest into the building.
He led the flashy young man through the grand foyer, boasting about the imported Italian marble and soaring ceilings. To the agent, the clothes made the man. He saw a designer jacket and a fast car, and he assumed he was dealing with the real power in the room. He spent every ounce of his energy catering to the guest he thought had the deepest pockets.
The Million-Dollar Reveal
Eventually, the group reached the penthouse. The view of the city skyline was breathtaking, stretching out toward the horizon in a sea of glass and steel. The elderly couple took it all in, their calm expressions a sharp contrast to the agent’s growing impatience. He kept checking his watch, clearly annoyed that he still had to deal with these unrefined visitors.
Are we done yet? I have other appointments, he muttered, barely masking his irritation. Without a word, the old man reached into his simple sack. He did not pull out spare change. He pulled out a checkbook. As the agent watched the pen glide across the paper, his face turned from annoyance to sheer, bloodless shock. He realized too late that true wealth does not always wear a designer label, and some of the biggest checks are signed in overalls.
