Take good care of him, the old farmer says as he passes the tiny black-and-white puppy to a stranger. He accepts a handful of cash, his heart heavy but his mind made up. Beside him, the mother dog watches with wide, panicked eyes as her last pup is carried toward a waiting car. As the engine roars to life, she doesn’t sit still. She sprints after the vehicle, her paws pounding the dirt road until the dust obscures her path and the car vanishes over the horizon.
The House In Flames
Hours later, the mother dog lies dejectedly in the grass near the farmhouse. The silence is broken by a low crackle and the smell of acrid smoke. She sits up, spotting orange flames licking at the window frames of the second floor. Inside, the farmer’s young son is fast asleep, oblivious to the inferno beginning to swallow the home. Without a second thought, the dog leaps through the front door and disappears into a wall of thick, gray smoke.
She navigates the burning hallway, her fur singed by stray embers and her lungs burning. Finding the boy’s room, she barks frantically, nudging his face until his eyes flutter open. Oh no, fire! the boy screams, jolting upright. He follows the dog through the crumbling house, staying low to the ground as she leads him through the maze of heat toward the exit. They burst through the porch just as the structure groans, the dog never leaving his side.
A Family Restored
The farmer returns to find his home a shell of its former self, but his son is safe, huddled next to the soot-covered dog. Thank God you are safe, the father sobs, pulling the boy into his arms. You saved him, girl. Moments later, the yellow car from earlier pulls back into the driveway. The driver had seen the smoke from the road and rushed back to help, but when he sees the dog who saved the child, he realizes he cannot keep them apart.
He hands the small puppy back to the farmer along with the cash he had paid earlier. This family belongs together, he says quietly, watching as the mother dog and puppy reunite. The farmer pulls them both close, promising they will never be separated again. In the ruins of the old house, a new kind of loyalty was forged in the fire.
