The moment the frantic mother approached— it was clear something was terribly wrong. As the human sat on their motorcycle on a sunny, paved road, a white Muscovy duck waddled right up to them, flapping its wings and making distressed sounds while its tiny, fluffy ducklings stayed close behind.
It wasn’t just a casual walk. The mother duck kept looking back and forth, clearly desperate for someone to understand that one of her babies was missing from the line.
Panic set in as they realized— the mother duck walked straight to a nearby storm drain cover and began pecking at it frantically. The human peered down through the heavy iron slats and saw the tiny, yellow ball of fluff shivering in the dark water below.
The little duckling was trapped, unable to climb the slick, vertical walls of the drain. It was a race against time, with the mother duck watching every move the human made, hoping for a miracle.
With trembling hands— the human lifted the heavy, rusted grate to reach deep into the murky darkness. They scooped up the wet, frightened baby and held it close, reuniting it instantly with its mother and siblings.
The relief was palpable as the family of ducks gathered back together on the pavement. With all her babies accounted for, the mother led her little train of ducklings safely across the grass toward the nearby pond.
They glided into the water, finally calm and together once again as they swam off into the distance.
