The Struggle On The Pavement
A ferret clings tightly to the back of a mother hen, its teeth locked onto the bird’s neck as she tries to shuffle forward on the asphalt. The hen’s wings are splayed out, her body pressed low against the ground in an attempt to shake the predator loose. Four tiny, yellow chicks follow closely behind, wandering in a tight formation near their mother’s side. The hen lets out a series of muffled, rapid vocalizations, her head jerking from side to side in an attempt to gain leverage.
A vehicle approaches slowly from down the road, its tires crunching on the loose gravel near the edge of the path. The car comes to a steady halt, and a man steps out from the driver’s side, holding a red canister in his hand. He moves with quick, measured strides, closing the distance between the road and the struggling animals. He does not stop until he is standing just a few feet away from the unfolding scene.
The Sudden Intervention
The man pulls the safety pin from the red canister and directs the nozzle toward the animals. A dense, white cloud of fire-extinguisher retardant erupts from the nozzle, engulfing both the hen and the ferret in a thick, powdery fog. The force of the spray pushes the air aside, coating the pavement in a layer of white dust. The ferret, startled by the sudden release of pressure and the change in environment, immediately releases its grip on the hen’s feathers.
The predator tumbles off the hen’s back, hitting the pavement with a thud before scrambling away toward the tall green grass lining the road. The man continues to hold the trigger, ensuring the area is clear of any further threats. The hen, now free, stands up and shakes her body, sending a small plume of the white powder into the air. The chicks scatter momentarily, their small feet skittering across the road as they move away from the lingering haze.
A Moment Of Restoration
The man walks over to the side of the road, placing a plastic basin filled with water on the ground. The mother hen lowers her beak toward the basin, taking long, rhythmic sips of the water while her chicks cluster around the edges of the container. The man reaches into a paper bag he brought with him and pours a handful of feed onto the asphalt next to the water. The hen pivots toward the pile of grain, pecking rapidly at the seeds as the chicks mirror her movements.
The man kneels on the asphalt, his knees resting against the hard surface as he watches the birds eat. The mother hen pauses between pecks to look toward the grass, her head bobbing slightly. The chicks tuck themselves in near her breast, their small bodies pressing against her warm, brown feathers. The man stays still, his hands resting on his knees, watching as the group settles into the calm of the afternoon.
The sun filters through the dense canopy of trees, casting dappled light across the road. The mother hen nudges one of her chicks, which is struggling to reach a large kernel of grain. She shifts her weight, her toes gripping the rough pavement as she turns to face the line of trees. The man stands up, brushing the white dust from his jeans, and the hen takes a few tentative steps forward. The chicks follow in a perfect line, their tiny wings fluttering against their sides as they move together away from the scene of the struggle.
