An Unexpected Roadside Encounter
A burlap sack is snagged over the head of a doe, muffling her senses as she walks erratically along the grassy edge of a paved road. Her movements are jerky and uncoordinated, her neck twisting back and forth in an attempt to dislodge the rough fabric.
Beside her, a small, spotted fawn stays close, mirroring her pace. The fawn moves with a nervous energy, occasionally bumping against the doe’s side as if trying to understand the sudden change in its mother’s behavior.
The doe stops, lowers her head toward the ground, and paws at the air. She is unable to see the traffic passing just feet away on the asphalt, yet she remains tethered to the roadside by a strange, blind panic.
The Careful Approach
A vehicle pulls over, its tires crunching onto the gravel shoulder. The driver’s door swings open, and a man steps out into the gray afternoon light. He watches for a moment, assessing the distance between himself and the disoriented animal.
He closes the distance slowly, keeping his palms out in front of him. His movements are deliberate, avoiding sudden gestures that might trigger a flight response in the panicked deer. The doe continues to toss her head, the burlap flapping with every sharp movement of her neck.
He reaches the side of the doe, his hands hovering just inches from the coarse fabric. The fawn darts toward the shoulder of the road, looking back toward the man, its ears twitching toward the sound of the nearby passing cars.
Restoring Her Vision
The man reaches out and grips the top of the burlap sack. He waits for a brief second, timing his pull to match the doe’s sudden head-toss. With a firm, steady motion, he slides the fabric upward and away from her ears.
The burlap falls away from her face, landing in a crumpled heap on the dead grass. For a split second, the doe stands completely still. She blinks, the air finally hitting her eyes and snout, and she shifts her weight back onto her hind legs.
The man steps back immediately, his hands dropping to his sides. He turns his head to the side, giving the animal space to reorient herself now that her sight has been restored.
A Quick Return to the Wild
The doe immediately finds her footing. She turns away from the edge of the road, her eyes scanning the field beyond the grass. She let out a sharp, breathy huff, her posture shifting from defensive to alert.
The fawn trots up to her side, pressing its nose against her shoulder. The doe takes a few quick, bounding steps away from the pavement, the fawn following close behind her.
They move across the edge of the field, their hooves striking the earth. The man stands by his car, watching as the two figures grow smaller and eventually merge into the treeline. The crumpled burlap remains on the roadside, abandoned, as the doe and her fawn disappear into the safety of the brush.
