The Warning Signs
A gray and white husky paced alongside a moving white transport truck on a desolate, mountainous road. Thick, dark smoke billowed from the undercarriage of the vehicle, casting a shadow across the pavement. The dog darted forward, its eyes locked onto the driver’s side window.
Inside the metal cage mounted to the truck bed, a black horse shifted its weight. The animal stretched its neck over the railing, its nostrils flaring as the smell of burning rubber and gasoline filled the air. The husky let out a series of sharp, rhythmic barks, pressing its front paws against the metal frame of the truck door.
The dog leaped up, its body parallel to the driver’s window. It clawed at the frame, persistent and rhythmic. The driver, an older man in a cap, slowed the vehicle as the husky continued its frantic movements. The man cranked the window down, his brow furrowed as he leaned out to look at the dog.
The Escape
The truck came to a full stop on the shoulder of the road. The man pushed his door open, his boots hitting the gravel as he stepped out. He looked back toward the rear of the vehicle, where the flames were now visibly licking the frame of the trailer.
The husky stood its ground, tail wagging in short, sharp motions, refusing to leave the proximity of the horse. The man walked to the back of the trailer and fumbled with the heavy latch. With a sudden metallic clatter, the rear gate swung open.
The black horse did not hesitate. It surged forward, hooves thundering against the metal floor of the truck bed before hitting the asphalt. It galloped away toward the open road, its mane whipping in the wind as it put distance between itself and the smoking vehicle.
The Aftermath
The man turned back to the truck, but the fire had intensified, engulfing the rear end in a wall of orange flames. He grabbed the collar of the husky, pulling the dog away from the heat. The two retreated to a safe distance, watching the vehicle from the side of the road.
A sudden, violent explosion rocked the air, sending debris flying across the pavement. The trailer disintegrated into a cloud of smoke and splintered metal as the flames reached the fuel source. The man crouched low, his arm wrapped firmly around the husky’s shoulders.
The dog sat obediently, its tongue lolling out as it looked up at the man. The man reached up to stroke the thick fur around the dog’s neck, his hand moving in slow, rhythmic strokes. The horse stood a short distance away, its ears swiveling toward the sound of the crackling fire, but its feet stayed planted on the dirt shoulder as the man and the dog remained huddled together in the shadow of the mountains.
