A Sudden Discovery Along the Shore
The golden retriever trotted through the narrow, trash-clogged concrete canal, its paws splashing into the shallow water. Ahead, a large, dark shape lay motionless against the rocky, debris-strewn ground. The dog stopped, pressing its nose against the smooth, grey skin of the stranded dolphin. It circled the animal once, then turned back toward the open ocean.
It bolted up the bank, racing across the sand toward a wooden lifeguard tower standing tall against the horizon. The dog reached the stairs, barking at the lifeguard as he stepped out onto the landing. The man looked down, his eyes locking onto the animal, and he grabbed his yellow rescue buoy from the railing.
The Manual Effort to Free the Marine Animal
The man moved with purposeful, rapid strides, leaping down the wooden stairs to catch up with the dog. They sprinted back toward the dark, narrow canal where the water pooled between the stone walls. Upon reaching the scene, the lifeguard immediately knelt in the shallow, murky water beside the dolphin.
He reached into his pack, pulling out a long, yellow rope. He carefully looped the line around the dolphin’s body, working his hands under the heavy, slick weight of the mammal. The dog paced on the rocky edge, its head darting back and forth as it watched the man pull the line taut. The dolphin remained still, save for a slight shift in the water as the lifeguard pushed against its side.
The man gripped the rope firmly, bracing his feet against the uneven stones. With a steady, controlled motion, he leaned his body weight backward, coaxing the creature toward the deeper water at the mouth of the canal. The dolphin moved inches at a time, its skin glistening under the overcast sky as it cleared the patch of plastic bottles and discarded wrappers.
Back to the Deep Blue
The lifeguard continued to walk backward, guiding the rope as the dolphin reached the gentle surf. The dog followed along the shoreline, its tail held high and its ears pricked toward the sea. As they reached the edge of the deeper water, the lifeguard slackened the rope, allowing the creature to reclaim its own momentum.
The dolphin drifted forward, finding its balance as the tide washed over its dorsal fin. It gained speed, cutting through the surface of the water with a sudden, powerful arc. The man dropped the rope, his hands resting on his hips as he watched the creature navigate the breaking waves. The dog stood still at the water’s edge, its front paws wet as it gazed out toward the horizon.
The sun began to dip, casting a golden light across the surface of the ocean. In the distance, a fin breached the surface, disappearing back into the crest of a wave. The lifeguard turned back toward the shore, the yellow buoy still hanging from his shoulder, while the dog remained on the sand, watching the last ripples fade where the dolphin had been moments before.
