A Dangerous Foothold
The golden puppy digs its front claws into the slick, red mud of the riverbank, scrambling for purchase against the steep incline. Below, the massive, dark shape of a hippopotamus waits in the murky water, its mouth wide and jaws lined with heavy, rounded teeth.
Every time the puppy tries to pull its back legs out of the thick, sucking mud, the hippo lunges forward, snapping its powerful jaws toward the dog’s paws. The puppy cries out, a high-pitched sound that carries across the open expanse of the muddy bank.
It slips again, its body sliding backward until its tail brushes against the rippling surface of the water. The hippo moves with surprising speed, its eyes fixed on the small animal as it circles just inches away from the muddy wall.
The Human Intervention
A man appears at the top of the embankment, moving quickly down the red clay slope. He reaches the water, his boots sinking into the soft sediment, and positions himself between the puppy and the massive animal in the water.
He reaches out, his fingers wrapping firmly around the puppy’s midsection. With a steady pull, he lifts the small, golden creature out of the mud and carries it upward, away from the water’s edge.
The man keeps his eyes locked on the water, his muscles coiled and ready as he moves toward safer ground. Once the puppy is placed on stable grass, the man turns his focus toward a different task, his hands moving with purpose as he prepares to address the situation in the field above.
Securing Safety and Reassurance
The man walks into a sprawling watermelon field, the large, striped fruits resting on thick green vines. He selects a round melon, lifting it high in his hands, and carries it back toward the riverbank.
He tosses the melon toward the water, drawing the hippo’s attention away from the shore. The large animal surges forward, its heavy bulk churning the water as it snaps its jaws shut around the offering, retreating deeper into the river.
With the hippo distracted and occupied, the man descends once more to the water. He drops a rope down the steep bank to where another puppy had been struggling near the waterline. He scoops the wet, shivering animal into his arms, pulling it tight against his chest as he hauls himself back up the slippery incline.
The man kneels in the red dirt, his hands rubbing the fur of the rescued puppy. The older dog, which had been waiting on the high ground, trots over and presses its nose against the puppy’s face. The puppy leans into the man’s palms, its tail beginning a slow, rhythmic thumping against the ground. The man continues to stroke the puppy’s head, his movements lingering as the older dog watches them both from the grass.
