A Sudden Hazard On The Tarmac
A small bird flutters its wings, attempting to lift itself from the gray asphalt of a country road. Its movements are erratic, disjointed, and the tiny creature loses its balance, collapsing back onto the coarse surface. The heat radiating from the sun-baked road appears to drain the energy from its frail body as it lies flat, its head resting against the ground.
A dark sedan approaches from the distance. The tires hum against the pavement, growing louder as the vehicle barrels toward the location where the young bird struggles. It does not move to escape the path of the oncoming machine, remaining pinned to the center of the lane as the grill of the car closes the distance.
The Arrival Of The Intervention
The vehicle slows to a halt, coming to rest mere feet away from the three birds gathered on the road. A man in an orange polo shirt emerges from the driver’s side door, his eyes locked on the scene ahead. He walks with purpose toward the center of the road, his boots crunching slightly on the loose gravel lining the asphalt edge.
He crouches down, his knees settling onto the hot road surface. He brings a plastic water bottle with him, unscrewing the cap with steady hands. The birds remain still, their beaks slightly parted, watching the man as he hovers over them.
A Moment Of Gentle Nourishment
He tips the water bottle, allowing a thin stream to flow over the feathers and head of the bird that had been lying flat. The moisture darkens the downy coat as he guides the liquid toward the open beaks. He then pulls a dropper from his pocket, carefully maneuvering the plastic tip to the edge of the bird’s mouth.
The bird accepts the drops, its head tilting slightly as it swallows. The man moves with slow, deliberate gestures, ensuring the other two birds huddled nearby are also addressed. He monitors their breathing, his fingers brushing near them to provide support without causing alarm or panic.
Shared Sustenance And Safety
The man pulls his hands back and reveals a handful of birdseed. He holds his palms open and low, presenting the grain directly in front of the three birds. The birds reach forward, pecking at the offerings held in the center of his cupped hands.
He shifts his weight, keeping his hands perfectly still as the birds feed. The tension in their bodies begins to recede as they focus entirely on the meal. The camera pans out to show the man kneeling in the middle of the quiet road, his hands acting as a temporary sanctuary. The birds continue to peck at the seeds, clustering together as they eat from his palms.
