A High Altitude Departure
The German Shepherd lunges toward the side of the open chairlift. His front paws scrape against the cold, hard metal of the seat frame.
He pushes off, his muscles coiling and releasing in one fluid motion. He is not alone in the air.
His jaws lock firmly onto the handle of a black tactical backpack. The weight of the bag pulls at his neck as he descends toward the snow.
He hits the powdery white surface with a heavy thud. He does not stop moving.
His claws dig into the ice beneath the surface to find traction. He keeps his head low, tucking the bag tightly under his chin.
The Precision Of The Drill
He gallops across the steep incline, his body leaning into the sharp slope of the mountain. Snow sprays in a wide arc behind him with every stride.
Above, the chairlift continues to rise, suspended against a backdrop of deep blue sky and distant water.
The dog maintains his pace, eyes locked forward. He moves with a singular focus, ignoring the drop to his left.
He reaches the edge of a jagged rock formation. The ground simply disappears into a narrow, deep crevasse.
He skids to a halt at the very lip of the opening, his back paws braced in the snow. He releases the bag from his grip, letting it rest on the solid ice.
A Sudden Turn
The dog stands perfectly still, staring into the dark void of the gap. The stillness lasts for a split second before the landscape changes.
A wall of fire erupts from within the crevasse. Orange flames lick upward toward the bright sky.
Thick, dark smoke billows out, curling into the thin air. The dog does not flinch or retreat from the heat.
He holds his position on the narrow ledge, his ears pricked forward. His tail remains steady behind him.
The smoke clears, revealing the reality behind the simulation. The scene shifts instantly to a wider view of the snowy slopes.
The Final Reporting
Three police officers stand in a line on the flat, packed snow. They are dressed in black uniforms, their hats pulled low over their foreheads.
The dog approaches the group, his movements calm and rhythmic. He is no longer racing; he is returning to his team.
He circles the center officer, his tongue lolling out to the side. He stops, looking up at the men.
The officer in the middle reaches down with a gloved hand. He presses his palm firmly against the side of the dog’s head.
He runs his fingers through the thick fur around the dog’s neck and ears. The dog leans into the contact, his eyes half-closed as the officer continues to stroke his head.
