A Struggle On The Roadside
A small, spotted fawn stands in the thick grass along the edge of a paved road. Its head is caught tight inside a thick, black rubber tire. The animal throws its head back repeatedly, its mouth wide open in a silent, jagged cry for help.
Each time it pulls back, the rubber ring jerks against its throat. The fawn’s legs are braced wide apart against the slope of the grassy verge. It shudders, its chest heaving as it breathes in short, frantic gasps.
Cars roll past on the asphalt, the hum of tires and the metal frames of vehicles passing just feet away. The fawn stays fixed in place, unable to move forward or backward.
The Approach
A man walks out from behind his parked SUV, his eyes locked on the animal. He lowers himself into a crouch slowly, keeping his movements measured and quiet. He reaches out, keeping his palms open and low toward the fawn.
The fawn continues to yelp, turning its head from side to side in a blur of motion. The man moves closer, leaning into the grass. He stops just within arm’s reach, observing the way the rubber sits against the fawn’s fur.
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a pair of metal bolt cutters. The tool is heavy and stiff, its jaws open wide. He positions the blade carefully against the thickest part of the rubber.
The Release
The man squeezes the handles of the bolt cutters. The metal teeth bite into the rubber, groaning as they force their way through the dense material. The fawn tenses, but the man remains steady, his hands maintaining a firm grip on the tool.
With a final, sharp snap, the tire splits open. The tension in the rubber vanishes. The man pulls the cut ends apart, and the tire falls away, sliding off the fawn’s neck and dropping into the weeds.
The fawn pauses, its head finally free from the weight. It stretches its neck forward, testing the space. The man reaches into his pocket once more, pulling out a small handful of food. He holds it out on his flat palm, extending his arm toward the nose of the fawn.
A New Beginning
The fawn steps forward, its movements tentative and light. It lowers its head to the man’s hand, pressing its nose against his skin. It begins to chew the food, its ears flicking forward to catch the sounds of the surrounding forest.
The man stays perfectly still, his fingers spread wide. The fawn eats with rhythmic, steady bites. Once the palm is empty, the animal lifts its head, looking toward the thick line of pine trees bordering the road.
It takes a small step toward the treeline. The man shifts his weight, drawing his hands back to his knees. The fawn turns its head one last time toward the man, then trots off the grass. It disappears into the shadows of the tall, dark trees, moving quickly away from the asphalt and into the safety of the woods.
