A Sudden Encounter On The Mountain Path
A woman pedaled her bicycle along a paved mountain path, the front basket overflowing with long, crusty loaves of bread. The gentle incline was quiet until a golden retriever burst from the grass along the roadside.
The dog darted toward the bike with speed and precision, colliding with the front tire. The force of the impact buckled the bike’s steering and tossed the woman onto the asphalt.
She landed on her hands and knees as the wicker basket tilted, spilling the bread across the pavement. The golden retriever didn’t stop to check on her; instead, he circled the scattered loaves with his ears perked.
He clamped his jaws around one of the loaves and turned away from the woman. She sat on the road, her face twisted in surprise, calling out to the dog as he trotted off toward the greenery.
The Pursuit Across The Meadow
The woman scrambled to her feet, her hands brushing the pavement to steady herself. She stood up quickly and began chasing after the dog, her eyes locked on his golden fur moving through the grass.
The retriever didn’t look back. He kept his head held high, the bread still gripped firmly between his teeth. He navigated the path with purpose, heading straight for a small, weathered wooden shed sitting in the meadow.
The woman reached the shed a moment later, her breathing heavy. She stopped, her hands resting on her knees as she bent forward to catch her breath. She stared at the interior of the hut, her expression shifting from irritation to sudden realization.
Sharing The Prize
Inside the shadows of the wooden structure, a small puppy waited. The retriever stepped through the low door and dropped the loaf of bread onto the dirt floor.
The smaller dog lunged at the offering, tail wagging, and began to gnaw at the crust. The larger retriever watched, standing guard as the puppy enjoyed the snack.
The woman stood at the threshold of the shed, watching the two animals. Her initial frustration vanished as she knelt down on the grass. She reached out and touched the adult retriever’s back, her fingers running through his thick coat.
She turned her gaze toward the puppy, who was now busy with the bread. She scooped the small dog up into her arms, cradling him against her chest.
A New Journey Together
With the puppy tucked securely in her arms, the woman walked away from the shed toward her bicycle. The golden retriever trotted alongside her, his tail sweeping back and forth against the grass.
She returned to the bike and lifted the puppy into the wicker basket. He sat down, looking around at the mountain scenery.
The woman climbed onto the seat of her bicycle. She hoisted the larger retriever up so he balanced on the back of the bike frame.
She began to pedal down the winding road once more. The puppy remained tucked in the basket, eyes wide as the wind moved his ears, while the larger dog looked out over her shoulder.
