A Close Encounter On The Roadside
A porcupine latches onto the neck of a fallen deer, its quills digging into the animal’s hide. The deer lies flattened against the grass at the edge of a busy road, its head arched back while a small fawn stands nearby, trembling. The porcupine remains locked in place, refusing to release its grip as vehicles continue to rush past on the asphalt just a few feet away.
A man pulls his vehicle over and steps onto the pavement. He carries a red fire extinguisher in his right hand, his eyes fixed on the struggling animals. He approaches the pair with long, deliberate strides, his gaze scanning the space between the thrashing deer and the stubborn, spiked creature pinning it down.
The Unexpected Solution
The man positions himself just a few feet from the encounter. He grips the handle of the fire extinguisher tightly, his knuckles whitening as he prepares to act. Without raising his voice or rushing his movements, he lifts the nozzle, aiming the canister directly at the space between the two animals.
A cloud of white chemical powder bursts from the extinguisher. It coats the porcupine, the deer’s neck, and the surrounding grass in a thick, billowing fog. The cloud obscures the view for a second, creating a sudden barrier of silence in the middle of the frantic roadside scene.
Clearing The Path To Recovery
The porcupine releases its grip and begins to back away, disoriented by the spray. The man keeps the extinguisher ready until the spiked animal is well clear of the deer. He then sets the canister down on the shoulder of the road and slowly lowers himself to his knees.
He reaches for a white cloth, carefully wiping the thick, powdery residue from the deer’s neck and face. The animal stays still, its breathing shallow, as the man’s hands move methodically across its hide. He continues to clear away the debris, ensuring the area is clean and the deer is no longer hindered by the substance or the encounter.
A Moment Of Peace
Once the deer is clear of the spray, the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small piece of food. He holds it out toward the deer, his fingers steady as the animal turns its head to investigate. The fawn inches closer to its mother, keeping its ears forward and its tail twitching as it observes the man’s movements.
The deer takes the food from his hand, its jaw moving slowly as the man remains kneeling in the grass. He keeps his posture low, watching the two animals as the cars continue to speed by in the background. The fawn steps closer to the deer’s side, and the man reaches out to gently stroke the mother’s neck as the video fades.
