A Heavy Obstruction On The Road
The large, dark rubber tire circles the stag’s neck, pinning its head tight against the damp asphalt of the rural road. The animal lies on its side, legs stretched out, its breathing shallow and rapid as it watches the vehicle pull to a stop nearby. Every time the stag attempts to shift its weight, the heavy rubber rim digs into its neck fur, restricting its movement entirely.
A man climbs out from the driver’s side of the SUV, keeping his eyes locked on the animal. He approaches the stag slowly, moving with deliberate caution as he approaches the creature’s head. He places one hand on the stag’s cheek and the other on the tire, assessing how tightly the rubber has wedged itself around the base of the massive antlers.
The Mechanical Intervention
He moves back to his vehicle and pulls out a heavy-duty chainsaw. The orange and white casing of the tool stands out against the muted, grey landscape as he walks back to the prone animal. He kneels down on the wet pavement, positioning the blade of the saw against the thick rubber sidewall of the tire.
As he revs the motor, the sudden mechanical roar sends a flock of birds scattering into the overcast sky. He shifts his grip, finding a better angle to slice through the final stubborn layers of the tire. The rubber begins to yield under the pressure of the blade, sagging away from the stag’s throat. With the final cut completed, the heavy tire falls open, losing its grip on the animal’s massive, branching antlers.
The Moment Of Release
The man pulls the severed sections of the tire away, tossing them onto the roadside grass. He stands up and steps back, allowing the stag the space to recover. The animal pushes itself up from the asphalt, its hooves scraping against the slick surface as it finds its footing. With the weight of the tire finally gone, the stag trots away from the road, disappearing into the expanse of the fields.
The man stands on the side of the road, watching the stag as it moves further away from the blacktop. He turns back toward his vehicle, the chainsaw resting at his side on the grass. The road is clear again, with only a few black rubber remnants left on the shoulder to show where the struggle had taken place.
