A Leap Into The Deep Blue
A golden retriever stands on the edge of a boat, muscles coiled, and launches itself into the rolling ocean waves. The dog hits the water and immediately begins paddling toward the side of the boat where a man in an orange shirt is already submerged.
The man reaches out, grabbing a handful of thick, dark green fishing net wrapped tightly around a dolphin’s body. The dolphin is struggling, caught in the synthetic mess that drags behind it in the deep, dark blue water.
The Struggle Under The Surface
The dog keeps its head above the surface, eyes fixed on the man working in the water. As the boat drifts, the man pulls the netting away from the dolphin’s dorsal fin, his fingers working against the resistance of the heavy, soaked material.
He grips the mesh with both hands, bracing himself against the side of the vessel to gain leverage. Beneath the surface, the dolphin’s grey skin shows streaks of algae and barnacles where the net has been cutting into its side.
The golden retriever swims circles nearby, occasionally checking the man’s progress. The man reaches for a yellow sponge and begins to scrub at the dolphin’s flank, loosening the stubborn buildup trapped against the animal’s skin.
Working Together In The Waves
He pulls more of the netting free, the strands snapping as he tears them away from the dolphin’s body. The man works methodically, clearing the tail and the underside of the dolphin until the animal is noticeably less restricted.
The dog swims back toward the side ladder of the boat, its paws scrabbling against the metal as it pulls itself up. The man follows, hauling himself onto the boat as the dolphin lingers for a split second near the ladder.
With one final movement, the dolphin’s tail catches the light as it breaks the surface. The animal leaps high into the air, clearing the water in a clean, silver arc before splashing back down into the ocean.
The man stands on the back of the boat, watching the ripple left behind. The golden retriever stands beside him, looking out at the wake as the boat speeds forward into the distance.
