A Lone Figure Beside The Road
A small, white goat stands pressed against a concrete milestone marked with the number 42. Its hooves are planted on the loose gravel of the shoulder, just feet away from the blur of high-speed traffic.
An orange fox approaches the goat, sniffing its ears and muzzle. The goat remains still, its head lowered slightly as the fox circles it, trailing a bushy, white-tipped tail through the dry grass.
Trucks and passenger cars streak past in the background, their weight causing the ground to vibrate beneath the animals’ feet. The goat does not run, nor does the fox show aggression; they stand together in the narrow, dusty strip between the safety of the field and the danger of the pavement.
The Intervention
A man wearing a brown canvas jacket and blue jeans enters the frame from the right, walking steadily toward the pair. As he nears, he lowers his hands, keeping his palms open and his movements measured and slow.
The fox retreats a few paces, watching from the edge of the grass as the man closes the distance. The man reaches the concrete post, his body positioning itself between the goat and the speeding traffic.
He reaches out, his fingers grazing the goat’s neck. He pauses for a moment, letting the goat adjust to his presence before he moves to secure the animal. The goat shifts its weight, its small legs unsteady on the uneven gravel, but it stays within the reach of the man’s hands.
Securing Safety
The man leans down, wrapping his arms firmly but gently around the goat’s midsection. With a fluid motion, he lifts the animal off the ground, supporting its weight against his chest.
He turns away from the roadside, keeping his body between the goat and the oncoming vehicles. The fox watches for a second longer, its ears pinned forward, before it turns and trots away into the scrub brush lining the highway.
The man walks toward a truck parked nearby, the goat resting quietly in his arms. He approaches the lowered ramp of the truck bed, his boots digging into the dirt as he prepares to transition the animal to a safer environment.
A New Beginning
The man sets the goat down on the wooden ramp. He maintains a light grip on the animal’s back, guiding its progress as it steps upward toward the bed of the truck.
The goat navigates the incline, its small hooves clicking against the wood. As it reaches the flat surface of the truck bed, it turns to look at the man.
The man steps back and closes the ramp, securing the goat safely inside the vehicle. The goat stands near the tailgate, looking out toward the open space where it had been found just moments before.
