A Tangled Struggle On The Asphalt
A male northern cardinal lies pressed against the coarse gray pavement. Its bright red feathers are dulled by the dust of the roadside. Around its legs, thin white strings are wrapped tight, pulling its feet toward its body. It cannot stand or fly.
Only inches away, four small, brown chicks huddle together in a tiny, shivering group. Their mouths are wide open, showing bright yellow and pink throats. They chirp continuously, their heads bobbing in the direction of the trapped parent.
A black car slows to a stop on the road a few yards away. The passenger door swings open, and a man in an orange shirt steps out onto the sun-baked ground. He walks toward the center of the road, keeping his eyes fixed on the birds.
Intervening With Careful Precision
The man drops to his knees on the rough surface, positioning himself between the oncoming traffic and the birds. He reaches out, his movements slow and deliberate. He does not reach for the bird’s body, but focuses his attention on the mass of white string tangling its legs.
He pulls a small pair of green-handled scissors from his pocket. The blades catch the sunlight. He leans in closer, his fingers steady as he maneuvers the metal point under the thickest loop of the cord.
With a firm squeeze, the scissors snap through the binding. The man carefully pulls the cut pieces of string away from the cardinal’s talons. The bird stays still, its breathing rhythmic against the road.
A Sustenance Offering
Once the last of the string is removed, the cardinal shifts its position, testing its legs against the gravel. The man reaches into a bag he brought with him, bringing out a small, clear water bottle. He tilts the plastic cap, letting a tiny stream of water pool near the bird’s beak.
The cardinal lowers its head, pecking at the damp pavement. The man then opens his hand to reveal a palmful of dry birdseed. He holds his hand flat and steady on the ground, keeping it perfectly still.
The red bird hops forward, its claws finding purchase on the man’s skin. It begins to pick at the seeds, taking small, rapid bites. The chicks remain right where they are, still chirping at the sight of the adult bird.
The Return To Stability
The man maintains his posture, his arm unmoving as the cardinal eats from his hand. The bright red of the bird’s feathers stands out against the pale skin of his palm. The cardinal lifts its head briefly, looking around before returning to the seeds.
The camera pans slowly across the scene. The chicks are still waiting, their chirps rising in volume as the parent continues to feed. The man keeps his hand outstretched, offering the sustenance needed for them to regain their strength.
The cardinal finishes the last of the seeds from his fingers. It steps back, turning its head toward the road ahead, where the distant mountains rise against the horizon. The man remains kneeling as the bird prepares to move off the pavement.
